Your Home Setup

Here's mine:

The router upstairs is connected to a switch downstairs via powerline networking as a wireless bridge didn't quite cut the mustard.

Conencted upstairs directly to the router are:

General Desktop PC
Running Vista and used rarely these days for the odd gaming session. It also takes care of most printing, photo editing, downloading, DVD burning duties etc.

NAS box
Used for shared storage, secondary backup etc.

Print server
Laser printer connected to it for shared printing duties

Hooked up donwstairs to the switch are:

HTPC
Hooked up to the hi-fi to take care mainly of my music collection

Tivo
A modified Tivo box that has a network card in it and running a web server so I can set stuff to record from anywhere on the network (including from the internet via VPN)

PS2 and PS3
Gaming duties naturally. PS2 will go soon once a work around for Guitar Hero on the PS3 is found

Then there are four laptops that connect wirelessly. Two each for me and my wife, one each for business and personal use.

The router is a Draytek Vigor which has a handy VPN server built in. It never ceases to amaze colleagues when I can connect to my home network and set my video (TiVo) or pull a vital file off the NAS!

This is my home setup:

My Room (Leeds):

Main Computer - (Soon to be upgraded)

Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
RAM: 1024Mb
Hard Drive: (Generic) 200Gb, and another 75Gb one
Monitors: One BenQ T903 19" Monitor (1280*1024), Two Fujitsu Siemens B15-1 15" Monitors (1024*768)
Graphics Cards: One ATi Radeon 9800 Pro, One ATi Radeon 9250 (PCI)

This computer is used for most things, (so for me that is basically using the Internet, word processing, and some programming work). It runs Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, and has an installation of Ubuntu 7.04.

Study (Leeds):

Family Computer

Processor: Pentium 4 2.8GHz
RAM: 512Mb
Hard Drive: (Generic) 40Gb
Monitors: One 15" Monitor (1024*768)
Graphics Cards: Onboard

This is used by the rest of the family for browsing the Internet, and doing other basic tasks.

Lounge (Leeds):

Laptop

Processor: Pentium 4 1.6GHz
RAM: 512Mb
Hard Drive: (Generic) 20Gb
Monitors: One 15" Monitor (1024*768)
Graphics Cards: Onboard

My Room (Northumberland):

Old Computer

Processor: Pentium 3 1GHz
RAM: 256Mb
Hard Drive: (Generic) 20Gb
Monitors: Two 15" Monitors (1024*768) (Although I can only use both if I bring my main computer, from Leeds)
Graphics Cards: Onboard

This is used for browsing the Internet while I am on holiday, it runs Ubuntu 7.04.

I also have a server in my room (running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS) but I don't use that much. I am planning on installing Ubuntu 7.04 on it in the summer and configuring a wiki (it is a web server on the LAN) for my notes (not that it will get used :p). There is a server in the Study (Leeds) that has Windows NT 4.0 Server Edition installed; my Dad uses it to store the family photos, and some music he has; this is basically an external hard-drive, although more cumbersome, and it rarely gets used.

I spend a lot of time using computers though, and I am expecting to upgrade my main computer soon, and also I am expecting to take on an old computer in the coming weeks for an Xubuntu install.

3 PCs. One for Video editing, 3d Modelling. One for gaming, bit of a waste at the moment as I rarely have time to game. One for folding.

Really need to build a webserver box, not wholly sure of the best setup though.

Well I was just feeling proud after making my network just right, and I wondered "what do other people have and what do they use it for?". So basically thats what I am after. The computers yuo have on your netwrok, what you use them for and what you would like to add. (With ofcourse no reference to what certain media might be)

My Layout:

Main pc:
For games, work, general use.
Laptop:
For work away from home, or watching films while gaming on main :p
File server:
Obviously for storing all media on it and streaming to other computers.
Cache:
Leaving on 24/7 so anything anyone wants to send to me can be stored while the fileserver is off, also a nice buffer so I can check stuff before moving it somewhere else.

I can VNC or FTP between file and cache pcs and the others.
VNC ??
you do know there are programs out there just dedicated to breaking VNC servers! it's not the most secure thing in the world!

why not just use remote desktop?

Main pc (in sig): XP Pro, used for games, office, email etc...

Laptop: XP Home, used for office, email, etc...

Netgear DG834GT router.

Whole house is kitted out with a wired network (installed when renovating it last year,) LAN points in every rooms :D

Soon to join the list (If I can be bothered or find the time!):

old-ish Athlon system (made out of parts of my last system and my parents last one) - either just a Linux box for playing with or to turn into a media centre/server.

really old K6-2 system (original spec was 400Mhz cpu, Voodoo3 2000 graphics, Soundblaster PCI16, 6.4Gb ATA66 drive, AT not even ATX! :p ) to make into a NAS.

Got loads of spares lying around.....
Networking kit left over after installing it, various drive and power cables, fans and fan adaptors, ZIP drives, trillions of spare screws, hard drives, network adaptors, RAID cards,

Main PC: General bits and bobs, used to be a gaming monster but it's 3 years old and only had a few upgrades.

Laptop: Again used to be a pretty good machine for gaming but its 2.5yrs old and only does web / email now

ibook: Use it when away, 12" so its light good battery life and very tough. Wanted to replace this and above with macbook but quality seems to be much worse :( Going to get an IBM Tseries instead i think

Used to have some servers in the garage but after work now i cba so they are to be skipped in the near future.
