Your HTPC...

Do you guys have to do a lot of fiddling to get those packshots/backgrounds for films/tv shows?

If so, how long does it take you to source them and set them up? Or is done automatically? Sorry for slightly OT post!

Worth mentioning for those using Vista Media Center rather than MediaPortal is that a similar plugin is available which is pretty slick:

Gigabyte DS3
2x250GB HDD
620w Thermaltake CPU
32" HDTV/22" Iiyama Monitor
Wii Remote as Remote

Had mine for many years now 4-5 ish

shuttle sng21
barton xp2500..although updated to a 3200 two years ago
started of as a 9800 pro but updated to a 7600 gtx for componant out, hd F T W
80GB harddrive all data is stored on a server out of the way....all 2 TB of it....not full though I would like to point out although HD material is filling it fast.
and running media portal....
with mce remote no mouse no KB

but alas this has all been put in to storage as I find my PS3 can do everything my HTPC could but with less hassle, although it doesnt look as nice(display wise)as some of the setups here.

My HTPC is in need of an upgrade:

Shuttle SB75G2
Intel P4 2.4 GHz 'Northwood'
1 Gb Crucial Ballistix DDR
2x500 Gb Western Digital AAKS SATA hard disks
Sony Optiarc AD-7203A DVD+RW
NVidia 6200 128 Mb AGP
On-board Realtek AC '97 audio
Microsoft MCE Remote & Keysonic Mini-Wireless Keyboard

Sony Bravia 26" TV

I recently upgraded the software to the latest Media Portal but it's starting to struggle with DivX playback and can't handle HD media at all, so that'll probably be my next project.

waiting for my delivery but my htpc will be as per my sig.

Creative XFI Soundcard
Sapphire 4850 512mb
Silverstone LC16B MR
1.5Tb ( 1tb WD drive for storage and 500gig WD drive for apps+vista+games)
Q6600
Silverstone NT07
4 Gig PC6400 Corsair
520W Corsair PSU
LG BR/HD Drive

thinking of running VMC and have a look at theses packs + film updaters that people are mentioning :)

running it thru a 50" plasma or dell 2407 monitor if on the ps3/xb360 etc, sound being passed over hdmi to a onkyo 606

I could do with upgrading my 500GB drive to 1TB, but I'm waiting for a drive that actually formats to +1TB, just so I have the satisfaction of seeing that much space :o

Mines a lounge HTPC connected up to a Denon AVR 4308 zoned into 3 (lounge, bathroom and bedroom).

Origen ae S14v case
Asus P5Q-EM
E8500
LG BR / HD DVD combo drive
Zalman heat pipe PSU
2Gb DDR 800
Black Gold BGT TV tuner
1TB WD Green
Logitech diNovo Edge keyboard
Logitech Harmony 1000

Does everything I need it to but would like True HD audio at some point and upgrade to a decent passive GFX so I can play some games.

Currently goes through a Samsung 32" but upgrading this to either a Sony W series or Samsung 8 series 40".

Squeezebox3 in the bedroom is nice and the ability to control the lighting with the Harmony 1000 is nice too.

edit: LOL, after looking at the AVS forum post about building an HTPC, the high end matx intel spec is basically me, but with a case far far nicer :)

hey guys,

I'm about to build my first one and I'd like to ask a question if I can..

Will the follow spec be good enough to play HD/blueray content without dropping frames, losing voice/picture sync or anything silly like that??

(barebones)
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2H (AMD 740G + SB700 Chipset )
2GB Ram
500GB HDD

I intend it to play HD/blueray from the HDD so no fancy expensive blueray drive here..

What do you think??

Cheers in advance guys!

No idea personally, as I don't know about AMD at all, but you should look into getting Blu-ray content decoding duties handed off to the graphics card. My cheapo ATI 2400XT has hardware decoding (as do other newer ATI cards I think) and so my PC doesn't break a sweat. I only went for the 'faster' XT model as it has a passive heatsink.

I am thinking of getting a Freesat card to go in my box now along with the Freeview one :) Has anyone done this? I am told it's just plug and play in Media Portal though (as with Vista MCE), which is cool.

More questions for Matt :)

In your first pic, you have the weather top right and news at the bottom. How do you get them working like that?

I looked at the StreamedMP editor but it looks complicated and I don't want to break it.

Cheers.

VMC can't handle different tuners (with different program listings) without the TV Pack 2008 add-on. I've tried a fresh install with the TV Pack this week and it lasted 24 hours before a format as it's a bug-ridden heap of rubbish that just wouldn't work properly. If you need Freeview and Freesat, I'd stay clear of VMC.

Don't know about MP though, would be interested to hear if this is possible.

'# Configure the RSS plugin: Launch MediaPortal Configuration and choose the Plugins section in the left-hand pane. You'll see all your plugins listed on the right-hand side. Under "Process Plugins", right-click on "MP-RSS Ticker" and choose "Configuration":

* RSS Ticker settings section: Enable the "RSS Ticker enabled" checkbox; enter your favorite RSS feed (e.g. http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_mostpopular.rss); leave items at 10; leave separator as "::"; enable the "Auto refresh enabled" checkbox.

Some really nice setups in here, that MediaPortal is spurring me on to get a decent TV card for the HTPC now - but I'd have to lose my 2nd OS as the controller on the board doesn't play with OSX :(

As I had to lose my main PC to keep the bird happy (don't ask), currently running this for media/gaming/internet:

Antec Fusion w/ standard 430w PSU and cooling
Gigabyte GA-G33-DSR2 w/ Porter NB cooler
Q6600 w/ Scythe Ninja Mini (not clocked, will be trying later)
4gb Geil LL
Gainward 8800GTS 512mb
250gb Samsung Spinpoint for Vista
80gb Hitachi on Sil3132 controller for OSX
500gb Seagate Freeagent for media/backups
Pioneer DVDR
Logitech Dinovo Edge KB/mouse

Displayed on a Sony Bravia 32" via VGA, sounds out to a Pure (previously Videologic) Platinum 5.1 kit. I will at some point upgrade to a decent 5.1 receiver and speakers...
