Just wondered what everyones using spec wise on their Linux box.

Most people who I speak to are using just a normal mid range box, sometimes even a 1Ghz Althon e.t.c. Nothing special. Heres mine...

Just a quick observation here, interesting to see a few people using ATi cards on Linux.

Am I really behind on the times or are the drivers still not as great as with nVidia cards?

Some of my machines are ATi just because that's the only way they were available (the G4 Server and the laptop). The other has an ATi card because it was significantly cheaper than the competitive nVidia card at the time, the 6800 GT. ATi's drivers aren't as bad as they have been historically, especially now that AMD is holding the reins and they're promising full support through open drivers.

Compiz fusion looks awesome.

You all put my hdd space to shame. I think I am going to have to get me a 500GB and get a full 1TB of space I only have three 250GB hard drive's lol. Then agen that's quite a lot.

Desktop:

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
AMD64 4000+
4x512 Mb Crucial Ballistix
Gainward BLISS 7800GS 512 Mb "Goes Like Hell" edition
1x500 Gb WD AAAKS Sata II HDD, 1x300 Gb Maxtor Sata II HDD.
Hyundai L70S+ 17" TFT
Dual-boot Windows XP/Ubuntu 7.04

Server:

Morex Cubid 2699R with 60w external PSU
Epia M6000 Mini-ITX
Via Eden 600 MHz
512 Mb Kingston "Value" DDR RAM
On-board Unichrome graphics
1x120 Gb Maxtor HDD
24x Slimline CD-ROM
SSH access only (root disabled)

I'm running Debian 4.0, mostly acts as a streaming MP3 server (GNUmp3d) for when I'm at work, though I probably don't need the server anymore.

Server (headless, runs 24/7 in loft):

AMD X2 5200+ AM2
3Gb DDRII ram
generic 8mb pci video card
1 x 200Gb drive
2 x 80Gb drive

Running Fedora 7 x86_64, Xen running three vm's for my testing/dev setup at home. Running 24/7 as dev server and also is file server, music repository etc..

Waiting for the AM2-compatible quads to come out then the 5200+ will move down to the Desktop in the study.

Desktop:

AMD 3500+ AM2
2Gb DDRII
X800 GTO2 @ X850 flashing
1 x 80Gb drive

Running Fedora 7 x86_64 again, but dual boots with Windows for games/Visual Studio 2005 (yes, sometimes I have to work :()

I haven't had any problems with the ATI card, it was detected just fine in Fedora 7 and a quick driver update worked no problem.

A 500G drive is only £60. one drive will replace 2 of your disks. Giving you the oppurtunity to go RAID or Backup :)

But if you don't need the space why bother?

I was quite surprised at all the ATi cards!
Ive got fed up with waiting for them to bring out some decent support, they still dont work on the new xorg versions among other things (composite extension being a big issue). So im only running linux on my laptop now.

Never had a problem with ATi cards. At least not with Ubuntu. I have installed bothe Edgy and Feisty on my main rig with a X1900XT and on my laptop which has some ATi Mobility card, can't remember what specifically though.

Mine...

Athlon 2600+
1GB Crucial DDR
NVidia 6600GT
1 x 80GB IDE & 1 x 80GB SATA

Currently using Kubuntu 7.04 dual-booting with XP.

Runs like a dream. Tasks are considerably faster under Kubuntu than they are under XP with the exception of boot times, for some reason Kubuntu takes a fair while to boot (prolly looking at about 60-90 seconds), although shutting down/rebooting only takes a couple of seconds. In XP, however, booting up is very quick (approx 30 secs) but shutdowns/reboots take forever (90-120 secs).

I'm always having to reboot Windows for various reasons so it's a bit of a drag, whereas once Linux has booted up I won't have to shut it down. Might look into it one day when I get the time.

Linux is great for making use of old kit :) And it still runs really well.

I'm playing on upgrading my main rig sometime this summer and will be using my current to test some different distros out.
