Your Monopoly rules

My family used to play Risk instead mostly. With my brother (lawyer) and my dad (company director) we would have epic multiple hour games of madness. Usually with my mum and myself dropping out fairly early to go eat chocolate and watch Christmas TV instead ;)

Unfortunately we weren't too good at monopoly as we all cheated constantly lol.

Rule 1: No monopoly.

Yep, same here.

I believe that Monopoly is the number 1 cause of people stopping playing board games.

It takes too long, often a clear winner is obvious early (which makes everyone else essentially give up), and then excludes players the game before it's over.

There are SO many better games available now, that Monopoly should be stricken from all games collections, and never spoken of again.

There are games like Settlers of Catan which involve trading and collection of resources, but are fairer, and keep every player involved (and with the possibility of winning) until the very last turn. I've seen someone who everyone thought had no chance of winning win it with 1 move - surprising everyone, but actually in a good way, in which you felt good for that player winning!

That's just one example of interesting games which have simpler rules than Monopoly, last less time than Monopoly, are more exciting than Monopoly, and will make you enjoy board gaming, rather than despising it.

Simply check out any of the games featured on TableTop on YouTube for more examples of these kinds of games.

If it 'takes too long' then shuffle the property cards at the start and deal them equally between players or deal say 4 each and get a head-start, also don't use the free parking or double go rules.

I will sound like a broken record, but again, just.... why move the thread?! It was not aimed at a target audience of those specifically into board games. It clearly belonged in GD and it was perfectly fine there. You basically just killed the thread. Sort it out guys.

If you guys think that Monop is complex, then I suggest shifting up a gear and give D&D a try :-)

We play standard rules with two exceptions. Landing on Go gives you double money and all fines from chance/community chest go into the middle to be collected by the first person to land on free parking.

This. Only problem is it gives players far too much cash when playing with only 2.

Also found out that Multi quote is way beyond my capabilities.

I often find find that girls want to make it a rule that you don't have to buy something if you land on it, I don't see why you wouldn't want to buy something and it just makes the game take forever.

eh... that is normal - having to buy a property that you land on is a dubious made up rule

you don't have to buy property if you land on it

if you chose not to buy a property then any player (including yourself) can bid in an auction for that property

Landing on a mortgaged property gives you the right to unmortgage it and take it. Adds a lot to the game. Still prefer Risk over monoploy though.

I don't usually cheat in life, but in Monopoly I have always thought that cheating was part of the game. If the other players cannot spot me slipping cash out of the bank; well then that is why they'll never make good property developers.

No.

Besides, Monopoly is the crappest board game of all time. Why not just randomly allocate the cards and jump the 'the trade' - saving everyone over an hour of time of total luck-fest! The winner inevitably being the one who trades with the moron / 'easily bored one' playing.

Catan - now there's a ****ing game. Cities and Knights for the hardcore

Agreed. With monopoly you might as well just roll a dice at the start to.decide the winner and not bother with the game at all.

Sellers is good with anu of the add ons. I'm really enjoying game of thrones. 6 players and it is just immense.. rules are intimidating but it only takes a few hours of game play to master the.rules and concentrate on strategy. There is relatively little luck beyond deciding on the houses

Agreed, that sis about the only strategy in the game, deciding if you should buy the property or wait and hope you get something you really want
Everthing else is either entirely random or entirely deterministic.
