Your Must Have Photography Kit

My Tamrac backpack holds 3 lenses, 3 flashes, body and accessories but that alone is so heavy. On the Finland trip my luggage with clothes for 4 days was 12KG, the camera bag was heavier!

Anyway, if out for a day shooting something specific it's just a side bag and camera + body. Battery lasts all weekend so don't really need to pack anything else other than the 35mm and body.

you love your 35! i have to admit it seems to perform so well, im off to finland in december and im planning on buying a 5d3, 35mm and a 16-35mm.

It is too good a lens to not use as much as possible :D The 5D was made for the conditions over there too :)

im glad you said that, im just worried about condensation, i have read lots of ways to combat it :)

Did you see my sledding video with the 5D3 around my neck as I sled down recording? :D Also went on Snowmobile Safari with it around the neck too. It won't break a sweat if you've got a weather sealed lens on it.

No i didnt, Where is the video of you sledding i would love to see it.

just bought a 24-105 L, i will be buying a 16-35 II L but i dont know if the 35 is weather sealed? i will have to go test my google fu :)

Actually I have more gear than that....

What I meant was, I only took this with me to Hong Kong.

And I forgot to use the gorilla pod, as in when i needed it, i left it in the hotel room.

I used the 17-40 outdoors when doing activities with a filter on the front, if the 16-35 has the rubber gasket on the lens mount end then all it needs is a good filter on the front and that will sort it, assuming it's the same as the 17-40!

"Ultimate" is a big word, but at least this is a very good try at getting to grips once and for all on how Canon lens weather sealing works.

The question is: do your non-white weather sealed L series lenses need a front filter to be rain and dust sealed?

The short answer is: a hand full do, the rest do not.

Long version:

I had a discussion in another thread where I claimed that Canon's non-white weather sealed L series lenses needed a front filter to be rain and dust sealed. These lenses are:

EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM
EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM +needs front filter
EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM +needs front filter
EF 17-40mm f/4L USM +needs front filter
EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro
EF 50mm 1.2L USM +needs front filter
EF 85mm 1.2L II USM
EF 24mm 1.4L II USM

Someone disagreed (someone always does) and asked Canon, USA, and got the following reply:

"Only our white "L" Series lenses are weather sealed. None of our weather sealed lenses need a filter to be weather sealed."

Needless to say my jaw dropped in disbelief, as I knew this was wrong. However, I also now that Canon's info on this is sparse and difficult to understand, so I decided to get things right once and for all, so I replied:

"I'll take the opportunity to pose the same question to Canon, Japan, and see what they say... "

And what did Canon, Japan say? Well, they actually also did not get it right the first time I asked (but at least it was ALMOST right). But to spare you the details here are the hard facts in translation:

"The water and dust proof mechanism is explained in the below URL:
http://cweb.canon.jp/ef/technology/eflens-technology.html#tecProof

We do have some water and dust proof Lens, but to enhance the proof, it needs to be used together with water and dust proof camera.

Also, for some Lenses we ask customers to put filters to prevent water coming in from the front part.

These are the Lenses we ask to have filters on:
・EF16-35mm F2.8L USM
・EF16-35mm F2.8L II USM
・EF17-40mm F4L USM

For details, please refer to the below URL:

◆EF16-35mm F2.8L II USM 特長

◆EF17-40mm F4L USM 特長
http://cweb.canon.jp/ef/lineup/wide-zoom/ef17-40-f4l/features.html "

As I knew that this was not quite right I wrote to them again:

"I am sorry for our mistake.
We have forgotten to mention EF 50mm F1.2L USM.
As you mentioned, this also needs a filter on the lens."

So for these lenses you need a front filter for the lens to be fully rain and dust sealed (I also noted this on the list above for a quick full reference):

EF16-35mm F2.8L USM
EF16-35mm F2.8L II USM
EF17-40mm F4L USM
EF 50mm F1.2L USM
And remember: The seal at the lens mounts will only work with a select few professional Canon bodies. Canon 5Dii and below need not apply.

Is this then the ultimate truth?

I really hope so, but I'd be lying if I did not admit that to me the front of the 50L and 85L II are such lookalikes that I almost wrote to Canon, Japan a third time...

the 16-35 II i intend to buy will be fine, with a filter :)

God your gonna have a lot of wait to carry :)" May The Force be with you"(Keeping in with the newly created star wars theme :)

Nah, tis not that bad, I've had most of it in my bag already and won't have some of those things in my carry bag anyway, such as the rocket blower.

I need to make a case for the 120-300 though, at the moment I'm thinking to getting a small waterproof silNyl bag and sticking some foam around the outside. Waterproof and drop proof, I despise camera bags as they are too heavy and uncomfortable.

Well, off today for two week trip to Costa Rica - Finally!

My bag, a lowepro 140, has in it, two cameras (NX300 + NX1000), 30mm pancake, 60mm macro, 18-200mm zoom, and 20-50mm kit lens.

Plus, about 100gb storage on various size cards, few usb sticks for backing up, a few filters, remote shutter release.

On the, a gorillapod and monopod.

All in all, considering how much I am taking, it's taking up little space and not weighing a ton.

Apart from times when I am just out for a day, this will be a typical setup, with the exception of having 2nd camera in bag, or the "pods".

Can't wait to get out of here now :)

Where are you going?

A few tips from my trip, take them as you will!

If you're going to tortugera (to see the turtles laying) you can't use your camera at all, however its in a really dark spot and the sky can be stunning if clear so you can take a tripod and take a couple of shots of the night sky while waiting for the boat to return.

Monkeys are difficult to shoot... When they're running around... I'll be interested to see if you can get any good video of them running! :p

Lots of wildlife can be a long way off... If you have live view then set the camera up on a tripod and view a zoomed in bit of the liveries to get a closer view!

Take a waterproof bag, it rains...

Yeah that sounds like a good idea :)
