If you're at all interested in WWII then The Man in the High Castle is definitely worth a watch. There are three seasons, all on Amazon Prime, and it's probably my favourite show. Highly recommended!

Dexter.

If you enjoy crime thrillers then you really can’t go wrong. Such an epic show that I should ban anyone that hasn’t suggested it already ;)

I am currently working my way through Boardwalk Empire. It is up there with The Sopranos and is actually pretty factually fascinating as a large number of the characters are actual real historical US mob/political figures, with the issues of the time interwoven with the plots and the like. The casual Al Capone reveal in one of the early episodes did actually send shivers down the spine, it was so casual.

Would go to 20 years as the early Millenium is when TV shows became like blockbusters with the likes of Band of Brothers, The Wire, Sopranos.

add to the list above

Better Call Saul
Godless
Generation Kill - keep meaning to rewatch this.
House of Cards (well first few series)
Stranger Things
True Detective S1 and S3 so far
Fargo
Marvelous Mrs Maisel

I also loved the early seasons of Weeds for short sharp episodes.

Doesn't fit in with the past decade but The West Wing, The Shield and The Sopranos are all outstanding.

Boardwalk Empire, True Detective are 2 more recent good ones. Depending on your sense of humour Flight of the Concords is great, but very marmite!!!

I have seen stuff like Lost, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones and really liked all of them, but that's pretty much it.

I'm not so keen on the super hero stuff. I prefer mysteries, thrillers, crime and fantasy.[...]
Any essential viewing I've been missing out on in the last few years?

Erm YES! lol

I don't watch much TV day to day either, though I've watched more than 3 series in the past decade and this has sometimes been achieved in occasional binges after operations etc..

I'm not a fan of the Super Hero stuff either but I will make one suggestion here - watch Heroes (albeit mostly just for the first season), I guess it has a bit of a mystery element to it.

You've mentioned one of my absolute favourites - Game of Thrones (I'm hardly unique in that view I guess! :) ). I might as well throw in my other favourites (which fit in your crime category): the Sopranos and the Wire - granted that is going back a bit more than a decade but in the latter case is around the same time period as Lost which you mentioned in the OP so I assume is OK.

Also, given you like Breaking Bad, watch Better Call Saul on Amazon Prime - it is the prequel series and a bit slower paced but really nicely done.

For other crime related stuff, in descending order, check out:

Bosch (has a couple of actors from the wire too) - several seasons on Amazon Prime now, based on books so generally rather high quality storylines rather than filler nonsense you can sometimes get with TV shows.
True Detective - some people seem to rate this as the best detective show ever.
Line of Duty - technically a BBC series but available on Netflix - bit different to the usual crime dramas as it involves a police unit that investigates corrupt police officers, got a bit silly in some episodes but aside from some silly moments it was a really good drama.
Ozark - a financial advisor to an crime organisation needs to quickly flee the city and move out to the country where he's then required to carry on dealing with a big money laundering operation and deal with assorted rednecks, local politics etc.. while keeping the cartel happy and himself + family alive
Ripper Street - slightly different, not actually about Jack the ripper per say but set in that era following some Victorian murder detectives (includes Jerome Flynn/Bronn from Game of Thrones as an ex-military detective sergeant), nice little BBC/Amazon Prime series
Narcos - drama following some US DEA agents set in 1980s Colombia

Also for a slightly random crime and fantasy suggestion - check out the Will Smith Netflix Cop movie: "Bright" where he's teamed up with an Orc as his cop buddy... bit of a mixed reaction to it but was a fun watch.

But ultimately, if you've never watched the Wire and you like crime series, then watch it, I can't emphasise this one enough, it is possibly the best TV seres ever made. It is written by a former crime reporter for the Baltimore Sun and so based in part on his years of real experience reporting on crime and corruption in that city.

A few random non-crime ones:

Stranger Things - this was just awesome retro nostalgia, set in the 80s and with an awesome soundtrack, a gang of kids on a bit of an adventure trying to help a lost friend... bit of sci-fi. Lots of people loved this and raved about it and the attention it got is certainly not undeserved, really enjoyable show.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel - comedy series about a female standup comic set in the 1950s, lots of people seem to be raving about this one too and it is definitely worth watching.

these next two are massively underrated though IMHO:

The Girlfriend Experience - Amazon Prime - Stars Elvis Presley's Granddaughter, she's a pretty decent actor in this - essentially a law student juggles her studies and internship at a big law firm and a side gig as an escort... sounds a bit silly but it actually quite well done.

Halt and Catch Fire - Netflix - set in the 80s at a computer company trying to make a new PC/IBM clone.

I know you didn't mention Sci-Fi in your list but I think the following are worth a look regardless:

Battle Star Galactica (2004) - for some people this is one of the greatest TV shows ever made, I'm not a big sci fi fan but I loved it.
The Expanse - this is a super grounded sci fi series, was worth a watch.
Westworld (2016) - based on an old 70s movie, its an AI sci-fi series based in a Wild West theme park where the hosts are robots and the guests can do whatever they like... including rape, murder etc..
Firefly - I only watched it because someone mentioned in a comment here that they were gutted it was cancelled after 1 season(there is a movie followup too), it was a bit cheesy at times (Buffy the vampire slayer on ships) but worth a watch.

Oops I forgot to mention Vikings. I'm up to date with that but its all I've watched. I thought it was decent earlier on but has lost its way in the last series.

Vikings on Amazon Prime is nice but Netflix's answer to it is arguably even better - try: The Last Kingdom

Set in the same time period but tells the fictionalised story of a Saxon (heir to a title/lands) captured as a boy and raised by Vikings. As it is based on books by Bernard Cornwell you won't have the worries about the writing getting sloppy/silly after a couple of seasons.

Slightly different but watch Kingdom it is a bit of a different (and rather good) take on the whole zombie genre (which I usually hate) set a couple of centuries ago in Korea

Also worth a look if you like historical stuff is Black Sails (pirate drama) on Amazon Prime and for something to watch with the Missus - try Outlander (also based on a series of books) - a time travel series set in post-WW2 and then in the Scottish Highlands during the Jacobite risings.

Also the BBC's adaptation of War and Peace is available on Netflix too and was pretty decent. I quite liked The Little Drummer Girl too (spy/espionage drama), watched it on iplayer at my parent's house.

Lastly, just to reiterate, if you've never seen it before and like crime dramas then watch the best TV series ever: the Wire
