Your number one Christmas song?

My favourite is O Little Town Of Bethlehem. It's just a lovely melody, which is pinched from an old folk song Ralph Vaughan Williams collected. I'm not ashamed to say it's one of my favourite songs.

I also like this, a lot. Kate Rusby's voice is beautiful. She is excellent live, too.

Although I never listen to this type of music nowadays, all of these still send shivers down my spine (in a nice but bittersweet way). They take me right back to Christmas times at my primary school in South London in the 1970's. The country was obviously far more Christian back then and Christmas revolved around the real meaning and spirit of it. They take me back to a very happy time in my life. One that I miss dearly.

100% same here.

Another song which takes me back is A Spaceman Came Travelling, Chris De Burgh.

A great rendition The Power of Love, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, which was used for one of John Lewis' best Christmas adverts back in 2012:

I really like a charming little ditty called [expletive denoting intercourse] Christmas by Eric Idol.

I also see Queen have got a mention, it's not really a Christmas song but Behemian Rhapsody has been Christmas no. 1 twice (only other song to do that is band aid).

Kate Rusby's voice is beautiful.
Thanks for that; not one I'd heard. But 'Who Will Sing Me Lullabies' is perhaps the most heartbreakingly wonderful/sad song every sung in the English language, so she was on my radar and it's good to have an excuse to add her to my Christmas list.

If live gigs ever happen again, make every effort to see her. She is excellent live and her voice is a thing of beauty.

I really can't pick one, as it's really just this entire album that my parents played every single Christmas morning. Because of this, hearing songs in this specific order is tied to all those childhood memories and emotions, so hearing them in any other way feels a bit weird to me. If I *had* to pick one... Meh nah I can't, it's one of the first 10 or so.

Also The Darkness, just because they're brilliant.

I'd say this too.

I'm sure all the usual suspects have been mentioned in this thread, but I stumbled across Rob Halford - Celestial a few years ago. It has some oddly catchy metal renditions of traditional Christmas songs!

It's different, if nothing else :p

this is a great thread to drink to on an evening (especially if you are single with zero social life like me) i used to watch this with my mum and dad as a kid ,but i just hate how she totally misjudges Bing then finds out the real reason behind the show but doesn't apologise ,maybe its just me

I spent 25 Christmases in retail and used to despise much of this thanks to being force-fed it like a goose on the festive foie gras production line. But now I'm free from the the retail treadmill I'm choosing to listen to it. Stockholm syndrome maybe? Or maybe it's good to have an excuse to wallow in festive nostalgia... until we hit Boxing Day and the post-Xmas melancholy starts to leak out of Pandora's present.

Anyway, two classics missing from the list so far...

I'll admit that I really don't like many (any...?) of the 'Christmas No.1 hit' type of Christmas song. A good choir singing traditional carols is great for me - or for a more modern twist pretty much anything Christmas related by Pentatonix.
