I found this on one of my backup CD's in my attic. According to the timestamp it was created in April 2001, that would have been before I got broadband in April 2002 and was using BT Anytime dialup.

I must have been crazy to download 221MB on dialup, 13 hours! I can't remember what I was downloading. BT (and a lot of ISP's) imposed a 2-hour auto-disconnect around that time, I was lucky to stay connected for 13 hours! We were paying an extra £11 a month too for an extra line, thank god for broadband.

I can do 221 MB in around 100 seconds with Be* Unlimited, crazy!

Must have been maxing it out :)

I used to have dialup with various providers starting back when Demaon were doing TAM (tenner a month) access. It wasn't unusual for me to have the modem dialed in all night downloading stuff. I used to download 700 meg CD images, used to take about 5 days... Last time I used dialup was in 2000 when we had a 33.6 permanent connection shared in our flat . This was quite rare at the time as most peeps paid by the min.

I find the utility with the internet access comes from 'always on' rather than blazing fast speeds. With a local DNS, and caching proxy server, my old dialup setups were just as fast at broadband, (but only if you were doing one... thing... at.. a.. time....)
