your sound

Yamaha RX-V650 feeding an Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo 5.1 package backed by a Pioneer DV-575A DVDA/SACD player.

I chose the freestanding speakers for both the fronts and rears as the floorstanders would have been even more overkill than they already are and I didn't like the look of the dedicated surround speakers.
The sub very rarely gets used as the speakers put out enough of a range to meet my needs.

I also have a couple of sets of Boston Acoustics Digital Media Theatre 2.1 speakers, one from a local business many years ago and another on ebay so now it is a matched 4.1 with a spare sub because the audio in socket can fail if strained.

on the HTPC - yamaha DSP-A1092, b&w center, jbl control 1 sats (cheap and cheerful but seem to do the job).
on the desktop - creative T40-II

How long did they take to blow your ears clean off?

Pretty sure I have seen pics of your setup actually, do you have them each side of a similar coloured stand?

Yeah, they're either side of the main AV cabinet, pics are in the sticky. It wasn't so much about the volume which having two offers, it's the way it evens out the response that was interesting to me. Once it's calibrated it's no louder than a single - but there's a lot more headroom :)

Mines on a budget but sounds fantastic (to my ears anyway).

PC soundcard: Asus Xonar DG
Amp: Denon PMA-250SE
Speakers: Wharfedale Valdus 400 floor standers.

Cost less than £100 for those 3. Toying with the idea of a new amp though. Currently looking at an Alpha Arcam 8 but not sure if it's worth my while..

Which PC? :D

On the main desktop, some £5 jobbies that I bought from ******* close to 10 years ago.

On the bedroom HTPC: Panasonic 50G30 speakers ;)

On the office HTPC: Cambridge audio DACMagic->Naim Nait 3R->Dynaudio BM5 mk1

On the livingroom HTPC: Naim DAC/XPS->Naim 52/Supercap->2xNaim 135s->Naim DBLs

Hello Neil ;)

Stereo only

Mission 754 freedom
Audiolab 8000P (power amp x2)
Audiolab 8000Q (pre amp)
CA DAC magic
MF V-link II

Various overpriced bits of wire connecting it all together :)

Stereo
Luxman L-220 Integrated amplifier
Custom made KEF chorale speakers

5.1 surround (when i bother)
Marantz SR4200
Various speakers (using the above stereo system as the sub)

All connected up via a Xonar Essence ST Deluxe with HDAV H6.

Digital output from my PC into a NonOS DAC, then analogues into a LittleDot4 valve headphone amp into a pair of Sennheiser HD600s. Sounds OK.
