I was chatting to a mate last night and found out he has a pretty strange button config that he has been using since quake days.
He uses left mouse button to go forwards, right to go backwards, num pad 4 to strafe left, 6 for right and 5 to shoot. Is that a strange config? or just an oldskool pro setup?

He was trying wow out for the first time and was having real trouble with using wasd and keybinds for spells and stuff.

That sounds disgusting. I am offended that anyone would ever choose to play like that.

What games does he play?

hell yes. I have no idea how you'd do that.

I once tried to play some bond game on console with a mate who had camera set to left stick and movement to right and found that hard enough.

Mostly online FPS, and the thing is he is a good player. I have been playing on and off with him since bf2 release. He says its just a config that he is comfortable with. I'm not knocking it as it works for him, but it just surprised me.

Is he left handed or something? it's the only reason I can see to play like that.
WASD has been the standard ever since I can remember & ergonomically make the most sense in most games especially ones that use a lot of keys.

Makes my head hurt just thinking about that config, Dude is quite obviously some form of Lizard.

What button did/does he use for jump, crouch and reload?

I'm not sure as I had drunk a few beers and was laughing too much about the rest of the config :p Looking at the keyboard, maybe he uses numpad enter for jump, 0 for crouch and 9 for reload? or maybe up arrow for crouch?

Nothing that obscure, but I use the arrow keys for movement and mouse 2 for jumping. Reload is mouse 4, which I find very convenient.

Sorry, but that config of your friends is awful, WASD and using the mouse to perform primary and secondary actions with your weapon or whatever and space to jump is far more effective in my experience.

Talk of odd controls reminds me of when I played Elite on the BBC Micro, the controls were I think, Z X / and ' Since you were able to use both hands on the keyboard you could use keys like / and ' on the right side of the keyboard. These days they hardly get a look in. These keys must be secretly jealous of WADS, I bet even Z & X are mildly jealous as all they have to contend themselves is the odd crouch or prone. / and ' even get overlooked in preference to the numpad when using the right side of the keyboard these days. I say we give these underused keys a chance.

Z forward, x back, left shift strafe left, c right stafe. Alt, reload. D for crouch, s for prone, space for jump and a for actions.

Works for me.

theres a disabled guy on iracing who uses a xbox controller, with his foot or toe or something, and hes quite good :o

Saying that, a member of ocuk, Gareth something iirc has a disability and plays with his face (can't remember exactly.) he has loads of vids in the dead space 2 is a disappointment thread, amazing guy to do what he enjoys, pity some developers can't support what he requires in remapping.
