Your windows license will expire soon

You can try and type that key in, there are usually 2 numbers on the sticker you want the one that's equal numbered blocks..

I bet it will not work, they probably used a corporate / msdn key to upgrade or install windows 10... So your pc's w7 key was never used to upgrade to 10... And they stopped the free upgrade a few months ago

Yeah you're right, it doesn't work. Unable to activate. Bah. Their store offers Windows 10 Pro for workstations, £149.

So if I buy this, will it work? Is this what I need, an OEM key? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Windows-Pr...qid=1521545497&sr=8-2&keywords=windows+10+pro

Well at that price it looks suspect, I don't know what the cheapest these can be is... I get them (semi legit) for £38 Inc vat from a large company... I kind of guess / assume they are £15 / £20 from ms to the big boys..

Id be interested if anyone knew the real oem price

Well, I think I'll take a punt on that Amazon one. cheesyboy and Paul11 seemed to have no issue with similarly cheap licences.

They are MSDN keys probably, shouldn't be resold and the chances are they will stop working in a couple years at the most.

This seller has been selling these since 2015, so if it expires within a couple of years, presumably I can buy another?

So buy another for another £8. It's not a big problem.

Though I suspect they're grey-market rather than outright dodgy . I simply don't believe the bulk buy price for manufacturers is any higher than that.

Wasnt saying dont buy but just making the OP aware that the key maybe disabled at anytime. My next neighbour bought one from Amazon and it lasted 4 months before MS disabled it.

They are for all intense purposes pirated copies after all.

The free upgrade might have ended, but microsoft are still allowing windows 7 and 8/8.1 license keys to activate their respective versions of windows 10 (this comes from personal experience in the matter with a windows 7 pro key used to activate an install of windows 10 pro and a BIOS embedded license for windows 8.1 home which easily allowed a windows 10 home install to take place).

Even though free upgrade has ended you can still do a fresh install and use the W7 key to activate W10. HAve done it recently on my work laptop which on delivery was W7 and I put Ubuntu onto it, recently installed W10 and used the W7 Pro key and it activated fine.

Well it didn't work when I used my Win 7 Pro key. Should I call Microsoft to ask if they would activate it for me and does anyone have a specfic uk phone number for them?

Steveocee, you're saying I'd need to do a fresh install of W10 in order to use the win 7 key? And are you talking about W10 Home or Pro?

Was going to post some slmgr commands to try but this article explains it all.

I'm not sure a a volume license install can be converted to retail though.

First run slmgr.vbs /dli to check what type of license is in use, post a screenshot here as I'd be interested to see what's on there.

Then run slmgr.vbs /ipk with the Windows 7 key. Hopefully this changes it to a Home\Professional retail edition.

Microsoft probably won't be able to help if it's a volume licence build, as above not sure if VL to retail is possible.

The Windows 10 ISO is multi-edition, during setup it'll as you to enter a key and then set the edition automatically.

I can share a link to a retail ISO from my google drive if needed.

Thanks Mujja. However, wooT! :D

Phoned up Microsoft and got put through to an Indian call centre. Very helpful and he was in a hurry because there's so many people in the queue. I got through straight away though. He verified my W7 Pro key then told me to type 'slui 3' in the run box. This brought up the same activation boxes that I used yesterday when I tried the W7 Pro key, but this time the W7 Pro key worked, so it seems it required the run box unless I typed something wrong yesterday. So now it's not part of the previous organisation and is now on a fresh digital licence. Lucky I didn't buy that key!

It's more then likely that the change product key was just using slui (and was probably trying to use the existing activation system the key that was being used had used), but adding the 3 to it in the run dialogue box added an override that allowed the windows 7 pro license to activate by going through the proper activation system (I am of course guessing as to why it wouldn't activate without having to use the slui 3 command).

I agree, the 3 was the solution here, and thanks for directing me to finding and using the Win 7 Pro key, good call!
