• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

You're Thoughts Needed Please

If you have the money then you may as well :) May not see a great deal of improvement, but there will be one. Some games will benefit more than others. What version are you getting? The 320mb will be better from those resolutions.

Seriously, if I can do it, anyone can.

I find fault with your premise... I'm a NO disguised swearing , read the FAQ disaster waiting to happen!

Seriously, my rig is quite old now, and I'm not sure if she'll take a very rough overclock!

Overclocking is always worth the effort. If anything else, you can only blown your old rig up and then replace it with something newer.

Now whats wrong with that.

For a res of 1280x1054 do we all agree that the 320mb version is more than enough?

Or is there an argument for future proofing with the full blown version?

Should be fine, Loadsamoney games at that res and he can't say enough good things about the 320MB card.

should be good but that cpu will bottleneck it
the 4000+ overclock to 2.6ghz very easily and 2.8 with a small voltage bump

If you play at 1600x1200 or less, then the 320Mb will probably do. Anything higher, and you'll need the GTX if you like lots of AA/AF on top :)

Right, this overclock business... would I need to change the fan or anything? Also, what about extra heat in the case?

Download a program called Coretemp, use this to monitor your cpu temperature. As long as your cpu stays under 60C and only has 1.5v or less going through itself it will be fine.

For now, use whatever heatsink and fan you have. See how far you can overclock before temps get high, aftermarket heatsinks and fans can be purchased if you want to overclock further in the future. Let us know how you get on.

Follow this guide.

Anything your unsure about, just ask.

At 1280x1024 I would imagine the 320mb GTS is enough in almost all cases, even with AA/AF enabled. You should also see a fair improvement in framerate, particularly with shader-heavy effects such as HDR.

Don't be scared about overclocking, it's really pretty safe. If you push your system too far when clocking/testing the worst you'll have to do is reset your BIOS by switching the 'clear CMOS' jumper on your motherboard forward and then back (or equivalently remove the battery for 30s). Hardware is fairly resilient these days. The only exception is when you go mad with the over-volting.

As stated you will gain a good deal when overclocking that 4000+.
