Hmmm....

Last time I was in America I had 2 conversations. They went like this:

First Convo said:
Him: So where in Britain are you from?
Me: Mid Wales.
Him: So you live in England?
Me: No I live in Wales. It's a different country.
Him: I thought England was the country of Britain.
Me: You say what? No, there are 4 countries. England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Him: Is Scotland part of England then?

I stopped talking to him. And he was actually serious :eek:

Him: Oh wow! I have a mate who lives near there, in Sheffield!
Me: Um.... ok.

EDIT: This doesn't reflect my view of americans. But meeting 2 stereotypes in one day was a bit much at the time

ive noticed this too.

You could probs start one of these flame wars by making an anti american or anti british comment in any video, come back 24 hours later and scroll though your baby

I've always wondered about this, for example there's a Canon Rock video played by funtwo, one of the highest viewed videos on YouTube which was posted ages ago. And people are still posting the same video :confused:

The comment section is usually crap, lately there have been a lot of chain messages going round which just does say something about the age of posters on YouTube.
However it can be helpful to find out information about the videos. People just need to take a rage dump before the post though

It will deteriote quite severely I expect.

You seem to be shocked at the fact that the American person you spoke to didn't fully understand the meaning of Britain, yet at the same time, you informed him that Britain comprised of four countries including Ireland - a separate EU state that is isn't even in Britain. As a British citizen, it's quite shocking that you were not aware of that.

I've travelled about a lot and I can tell you that the average 20 something backpacker hasn't even heard of Scotland let alone Wales. Many Spaniards believe that the entire island is called England.

From a global perspective, England is the dominant entity in Britain, so outsiders naturally assume that Britain/England/UK are all the same political and geographical entity.

Telling an American (or any average foreigner) that you are from Wales is like a Spanish person telling you he's from La Rioja and expecting you to know it - one of Spain's many "home nations" which has more autonomy than Wales will ever have.

So, as you don't even know the politics and geography of your own state "the United Kingdom" you shouldn't go bad mouthing other nationalities for their own misunderstanding. OK?

My point was, however, that in his mind "Britain" was a single country, about the size of Miami or something.

Citizens gets wrapped up in their own countries and frequently don't even know their own politics, etc. So you can understand why other nationalities know F all about other countries, never take offence to it, just educate.

Despite what chestpuffed racists might tell you, the 'Great' in this case means 'Big' i.e. - Great Britain is the biggest island (the one with england, scotland and wales in it)

Chain nonsense has been a part of the internet since it started being widely used. I think I started to subconsciously filter it out at some point in 2002.

I know NI is part of the UK, but not GB, yet it's citizens hold British passports and some hold Irish. Explain that to an American!
