Zen MaxDSL information

It is only when we get a pay as you go system that we will get a 'fair' system.

It simply isn't fair that someone who downloads 10gb a month should pay the same as someone who downloads 80gb a month, just as it isn't fair that the person who downloads 80gb a month shouldn't be paying the same as someone who downloads 200gb a month.

As soon as we get a PAYG system this pointless bickering will cease

This is a bit of a shock but given the cost of maxed out 8meg being £1700(!!) I can see why Zen have done it.

If I was on Zen I wouldn't be that fussed if I was on 2meg as I would just stick with that (but I've never had a great line).

I think it is just the thought of having a cap and having to constantly worry about your usage but if you can e-mail (what seems to be a very decent) tech support and they tell you then I suppose that reduces the worry. (Unless they e-mail back and you have gone over!!)

Guess it's only a matter of time before AOL and Eclipse do the same. I think the days of unlimited home DSL products are numbered with these increases in speed (MAXDSL).

Ah well it was fun while it lasted and it had to end sometime.

If you are already on Home500, Home100, Home2000 or any SDSL or Office products you can keep them.

There will be unlimited products, just they will be Office only. So expect a high price.

If you are a heavy user I would recommend looking at LLU. LLU Providers don't have to pay the Central costs, so in theory they might be cheaper. (But then again it does cost a LOT of money to LLU an exchange, including the backhaul) However when a certian number of LLU lines is reached in the UK, OFCOM will allow BTW to reduce the price of the Centrals. (These are what bring the connnection from BTs network to the ISP), which might make DSLMAX more appealing as caps should go up, prices go down or Zens profits go up. :P

Zen LLU is also unlimited, my friends in Rochdale enjoy pings of around 10 and over 4mb constantly. But you need to live in Rochdale. It would need to be 100mb before I move there. :D

lol, this is all rather amusing.

For months and months Zen employees have been posting on various message boards

"Zen is not capped and it won't ever be"
"Zen is and always will be unlimited"
etc etc

I find it a little ironic :) Safe to say i'll remain on my current zen connection such that it remains unlimited.

Kind of sucks, guess I will be staying with my 2mb for now. Wouldn't mind if it were a more reasonable cap (75-100Gb)

ok, I am on 1000 at the moment, when this "max adsl" comes along will I be ableto recieve it, I can only just scrape the 1mbit line at the moment, will the max adsl allow me to recieve faster or is it physically impossible?
Thanks!

Depends if your line's capable of more, but held back by the BT Checker database, or if that's as much as it'll do.
Line stats (attenuation, SNR margin etc) and this should give a rough idea.

Yes I work in Technical support.

I don't think Zen have ever ruled out the possibility of caps. But if an ISP that isn't LLU based was to offer an 8mb connection with no caps, they would be out of business very very quickly. Especially if all other ISPs have caps. It is going to attract all the heavy users.

And as 80% of Zen users use less than 20GB, you can see that the low users are already subsidising the high users a LOT.

And remember if you do want unlimted you can, you just have to pay for it.

Stay tuned for our Office product lineup. :)

Yes, I am in work now and will be until 8pm. :( feel free to call and experience the best tech support ever. But I cannot garantee you will be able to talk to me, if I am on another call etc.

To upgrade the line speed, is it just a matter of phoning Zen and asking them to do it?

How long does it take for the speed change to happen?

I feel sorry for people who will still think about joining Zen from 1st March, seeing as from that date on all of there services will be capped. I dont think so many people will be joining them with the handful of ISP's still doing unlimited

Yes you can, call 0845 058 9000 and speak to Sales.

I have been experimenting with routers tonight. Got a DG834GT from work and plugged it into my master test socket with a new filter. I get

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 576 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 57.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 27.6 db 23.0 db

My line Attenuation has gone up from about 54db :(
And the Noise Margin has gone up slightly.

Might change it back, from what I know BT care mainly about the Attenuation.

Although it is only going to be 1mb anyway.

thanks tolien - will look at this seriously now as i don't *usu* d/l more than 30-40gb pcm but if uploads are included this would be well over the 50gb cap

is the netgear dg834g compatible with max adsl?
