Zen MaxDSL information

Yeah I realise RAMBO keeps reducing the speed until it gets a decent Noise Margin.

But with the current system it is all about the Attenuation. I might change it back then. But either way it is going to be 1mb maximum. :(

I will stay at 1mb for a while then depending on my download habits I might change to DSLMAX. Should get just over 2mb according to the line checker.

Uploads don't matter and yes, DSLMAX is only ADSL1, hence the 8mb limit, so it will work fine with a DG834G. ADSL2+ will require soemthing else though. I think the only people using this are Be.

Come on Tolien gimme your IP address or username and we can see how much you have been downloading*. :P

(*Only joking as posting such details would be a breach of the data protection act)

I always thought that your upload always counted towards your total as mentioned numerous time on here.

I wish Zen would open on saturdays so i can upgrade as time is ticking by. :(

They're exposed through the MRTG or RRDGraphs I've got running anyway :)
As I said, average 83.17GB/month since the 1st of August 2004 (dropped slightly, this month's been lighter). I'd fit (just) within Nildram's 50GB peak time though. :)

Was about to say that ;)

I'm stuck now. I'm a heavy user and don't mind admitting it really. I'm currently on Pipex 2mb 'unlimited'. Been with them since March 16th last year. Since my level of service has declined recently with Pipex I was gonna migrate to Zen around March 16th onto there 2mb uncapped service.

Now after hearing about there account changes, it leaves me today and tomorrow to contact Pipex, request a mac, get the mac and order zen. Which i think will be impossible. I'm happy paying ~£35 a month for 2mb and the usage I do. Its looking like AOL might be an option for me.

edit: after re-reading the zen press release, am I right in thinking the 2mb service will remain uncapped? That'd suit me, since I'm in Wales theres no telling when the maxdsl service will actually become available.

Its my understanding that all the Home packages will be capped except Business Packages.

Its hardly likely they would uncap the 2Mb and cap the 512k + 1Mb Packages.

*Finally ordered my speed upgrade this morning.

At Zen, it says that the packages will no longer be available from the 28th. Does that mean today is the last day?

Yeah i checked and I'd misread about the 2mb service. And the 18th is tomorrow so i guess tomorrow is the last day. Might have to check out Nildram see what they offer.

Regretably, AOL probably is your best bet since the break-even point for a DSL service is has been roughly around 10-12GB per month but I am less familar with Wholesale pricing for MaxDSL so it may have changed a little.

You need to find a provider where your high download level is rare and is balanced by loads of people doing 1-2GB per month which is more typical of AOL users.

The problem Zen face is with that 80% doing less than 20GB figure; they ran for a long time on promises of no capping and attracted a lot of the high-bandwidth users as a result which leaves them with a relatively unbalanced mix of users compared to some other providers who capped early and forced out the extreme end of the scale.

I'm on the home 2000 product at the mo, but as a light downloader of 2 Gb per month will change over to 8 Gb active at £24.99 per month and save a tenner. Don't forget that you can change between the 20 gig cap and 50 gig cap free of charge and as many times as you want. So if you think your round the 20 Gb target go for Active at £24.99 and when you get your email at 95% usage, upgrade free of charge to 50 gig cap, then back down again the following month. Zen say we can do this as often as we like and I expect it will stay that way as long as its not abused. :)

Even with the caps, they are still the best ISP out there.

I must admit that I am missing my AOL since I moved over to the Zen Home 2000. It seems a lot more slower loading up pages and d/l'ing as well. Im using a Speedtouch 330 modem, and currently have a extension cable plugged into an extension socket upstairs, whether this is good or bad is another thing, but no other way around it until I have an extension socket installed, maybe thats the reason for slow speeds?

probably. What are your line stats?

I don't think Zen will be supporting USB Modems on MAX Products. Even with the patch they can be "dodgy", especially when using USB1. Doubt it goes 8mbs lol. There are plenty of cheap single port ADSL Ethernet modems around anyway. The Voyager205 as an example.

I do know that most of the USB 1 modems only go upto 8mb, but probably they are only really viable to use on connections upto 2mb really, as after that they will be degrading. I do already have a Netgear 834 that Zen will support for at least 2 years, its just finding the time to hook it all up to be in-built ethernet port. Will I see any increase in speed after doing this?

Can understand why Zen are bringing in a cap for their 8mb packages though. I've only just recently moved to zen and Home 2000 and I'll be buggered if I'm going back to dreadful Plusnuts. Zen have been a breath of fresh air, but the Home2000 pricing will possibly make me look at alternative places too, even though I'd never get the same quality of service.
