Zen removing my static IP addresses

This will be a complete pain for me and will break many of my services I host.

Why? This is why we have DNS, so that IP addresses can change. All you have to do is wait for the changes to propagate through DNS.

Are you losing IP addresses?

Well yes I am losing IP addresses, it's going from 5 to one, I use more then one and have done since I took the service out with Zen 17 years ago.

The DNS changes are not a huge deal but it's all work I wouldn't of needed to do.

I'll find out tomorrow if they will at least leave my service with 5 but be it with new ones, I'll ask but I expect they are going to want me to pay, at which point I will look at other ISPs, seems a sure way to lose me as a customer

In the Zen contract (and it has been there since they first started) it says they can change the contract by giving you one month’s notice. You have the right to terminate the contract as a result.

Sorry, but the fact you’ve had 5 fixed IPs for free for 17 years is very good in itself and basically, they’re changing your contract but you can go elsewhere. Or you can just pony up the £10 per month for 5 fixed IPs and be done with. I 100% understand that they’re changing fundamental stuff in your life but they’re not breaking the contract, they’re exploiting a clause in it in their favour.

So nice of them :D Why is it "good in itself" this is what I was originally sold!?! it's not good, it was just what they sold me!

I called them this morning, the agent didn't have a clue this email went out. They have asked me to reply to the email stating I am a loyal customer of them and can I please keep my 5 IP's... but of course this is going to work ! We will see the outcome but I can't wait too long to make a decision as by end of Feb they will cut these IPs off and if I need to move I need to place an order in with another provider and break the contract as I have a year to go. It takes time to migrate to a new line and I want as minimal disruption as possible obviously. They are not making this very easy for me!

4 extra IP addresses will be £10/month on top of what you currently pay. That’s cheap. It’s obviously up to you but I’d be tempted to just pay the £10/month and be done with it.

It's £5 a month with Aquiss for a /29, that difference soon adds up, especially if OP intends to stay long term.

Voda only made me pay for 1 of the 4 I needed :) - £33 a month for 4 fixed and 1000/1000 really is a bargain. £5 a month for a /29 is decent. In a world where v4 addressing is seriously running out cheap deals will be getting more and more thin on the ground I imagine.

Your router should be able to update a domain dynamic dns example myhost.noip.com whenever it changes.
You don't need a Static IP.

If you are not getting mixed up with a public facing IP which you would need. Not behind CGNAT.
I don't think you understand what I've written.

If I am doing a site to site VPN over the internet with another endpoint, and that endpoint does not support FQDN then I would need a static address unless I manually changed the configuration each time my home IP changes.

Likewise if I use something such as Oracle cloud, they only support IP addresses in ingress rules to VPS instances.

There absolutely are use cases for requiring a static IP at home.

Ah I misunderstood, I get you now.

If we’re talking about the long term, what do you know about Aquiss? The Aquiss Ltd. At the bottom of the website page appears to be a micro-company with just one employee. Are they really that small or is there some subsidiary company involved?

Honestly, you had a good run for 17 years, Zen have made a commercial decision that they want to charge for IP’s like pretty much everyone else does and given you notice. You don't own the IP’s, the contract you agreed to allows them to do exactly this and you can either migrate to new paid IP’s with Zen, or move elsewhere, a lot has changed in 17 years an it‘s probably overdue. I get its mildly annoying, but why not use it as an opportunity to look at what you do/how/why? If you know the IP’s in advance then it’s easy to make downtime almost non existent.

I don’t really know, does it matter? They’ve been going since 2005 or so. I was with them for around 18 months and they were superb. I know others on here use them and again no issues. And they have excellent reviews online going back years.

I moved from Zen and comparing the two from a connection and also customer service point of view, I highly doubt I’d go back to Zen.

I take your point however what happens if the only employee gets sick. Or retires? Or anything else? Their crisis plan probably involves migrating straight over to another Openreach reseller. Probably BT as they seem to be the default for most things broadband. People talk about the great service they’ve received and I’m sure they’re correct and Aquiss is amazing. I’m just pointing out it appears to be only one person deep. It’s not meant to be a criticism, it’s how I operated myself for years.

I’m not Zen’s biggest fan recently but they’re big enough and profitable enough that I’m not worried about them being here in a couple of years time. And that’s from someone who has just been bitten by the sale of Upp to Virgin Media. Upp looked like a big, well funded, operation but apparently they never breached 4000 unique customers. That really shocked me. Only 4000 customers.

Looking at Aquiss’ turnover they would appear to have between 400 and 2000 unique customers based on their current prices. Probably the lower number because it’s the kind of company that would attract higher-end higher paying customers. Again, not a criticism, many would see it as a good thing. Can you imagine calling Virgin Media and getting the same call handler every time? The Top-tier technical expert who actually has the power to say “yes” rather than palm you off with some scripted drivel? I can see the attraction.

So seems like crisis averted. I will still need to make some changes to my network but they are going to move me over to a new range and I get to keep a new block of IPs (until they wanna sell these off as well?)

I hope you are doing well and thank you for getting back to us.

I am sorry for the inconvenience with the IP change but unfortunately this change will be going through and we will assign yourself a new IP address range.

We can get this arranged for you for free of charge and no extra cost. This would be a new block of 8 IPs you receive and we would not know what these IPs will be until this gets assigned and you receive an email about this.

Now I just need to get them to change the crappy mid week time they want to make the change (who does this sort of work mid week!?) but maybe that's going too far :D
