I have read in a couple of places now that the 1.8 Zetec lump came in two variants, one making around 105bhp and the other making a fair bit more (heard 130bhp touted?), with the difference being predominantly down to the cams. I have also read that these different cams are simply the cams from the 2L Zetec unit.

I forgot to bookmark all of these pages :(

I have an opportunity to get the 2L cams, so if its worth a few bhp I may as well do it. Has anyone here done this and if so, what sort of gains were there if any (or have I totally misunderstood whatever it was I have read?). I would assume the 2L cams had a different profile given the extra capacity, but is that profile in the 1.8 going to bugger up my idle and low-end tract?

Your thoughts please :)

Is the extra cost, for purchasing and fitting the parts and not forgetting the extra insurance really worth it?

Costs = negligible

Fitting = not hard, its not like I would be silly enough to pay someone to do my engineering work ;)

Gains - well, thats what I am asking about but if you could extract some power for a couple of hours work and a few quid then wouldnt you?

I really dislike the attitude that unless you drive some kind of fire-breathing monster, there is NO point in doing ANYTHING to a car that presents itself over and over again on here :( What happened to all the mod-happy people of the past?

Well if it is cheap, and the insurance dont bend you over then go for it. :)

Yes fitting the 2.0l cams will give you a noticeable boost in bhp its the cheapest and easiest way to get that amount of bhp gain.

feel free to drop me message if you need any further advice etc.

Just out of intrest what kind of gains are we talking. :)

2l cams with a decent air filter, decat+exhaust should help make it more peppy. Iirc 130brake was used in some cabrio models for escorts and some models of fiestas.

IIRC you need the 2.0 throttle body too.

Indeed.

I am thinking up a list of bits to pinch :p

I had the 1.8 Escort Si - 115 BHP, whilst shopping around before I bought that, I recall reading up on the 1.8 Escort GTi; that had 130 BHP.

Scort.

I think its more to do with the fact that putting 2.0L cams etc. in a 1.8 is probably only going to end up giving you less power, smoothness etc. than just having a 2.0L and probably cost more to insure a modded 1.8 than a stock 2.0

...if you were going to try and DIY turbo it or something I expect people would be more enthusiastic :D

Less power? Did you not read what I posted? Ford released a 1.8 engine with the 2L cams that made more power ;)

Who said a turbo was off the cards anyway? ;)

Fair enough, I just figured that a 2.0L variant of what I assume is a virtually identical engine would produce more power than the 1.8L with a set of 2.0L cams on it.

1.8 came in 105ps, 115ps and 130ps versions. Primary differences are cams, ECU and throttle body. The 130ps cams are the same as the 136ps 2.0L Zetec used in the Mondeo.
