oh i also here zetec is a rip off of vtec or sumin... but i plan to get a car that might havezetec so what does it do

Nah, they're entirely different things.

Zetec = Trim Level
VTEC = Variable Valve Gizmo
MIVEC = Mitsubishi Variable Valve Gubbins
VVT = Toyota Variable Valve Wotsit

ok what makes a car with a zetec engine different to a car without 1?

It's JUST a name for a series of engines afaik in that respect. Nothing different, nothing like VTEC.

Zetec is the name given to the 16v family of engines developed by ford from the early 90's. Also, in later years they started to use the name Zetec as a trim level on some models. It doesn't really "mean" anything - it's just a name for the engine. Ford have a history of naming or lettering engines (Endura, Duratec, Pinto, Essex, Cologne, Kent, Valencia etc)

Zetec has nothing to do with, and is not a copy of, Honda VTEC.

Duratecs are the next generation up from Zetec engines. All rather nice and new with chain drive systems, unlike the Zetec with its cambelt. Zetec now is simply a trim level, believe whats written on top of your engine :).

Although just to confuse things, I have a Duratec engine thats technically neither a Duratec or a Zetec but its badged as one ;).

the plastic cover on my engine says Duratec, but isnt this the same 1.25 16v used years ago in the mk5 and called a zetec?

Zetec as mentioned was an engine name, then became a trim level. Duratec originally applied to the Ford V6's and was and still is an engine name. The St170 engine in the focus also got called the duratec(am i right in thinking that is a straight 5 cyl engine) then ford just started calling everythinh that wasn't a diesel duratec hence the label on your fester.

The st170 is the Zetec-SE 2.0 4 cylinder. Do you mean the Focus ST? Thats the Volvo 5 cylinder 2.5.
