Zetec?

Duratecs are the next generation up from Zetec engines. All rather nice and new with chain drive systems, unlike the Zetec with its cambelt.

Actually there are a number of Duratec engines which are simply rebadged Zetecs, complete with cambelts.

One such culprit is the 'Duratec ST' and possibly the 'Duratec RS'.

It was actually developed by Yamaha originally and then licensed /sold to Ford.

Do a google on zetec and you'll get all the history.

So my 1.6 Zetec is infact completely designed by Yamaha?

Not what I said ;)

1.25, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7 Zetec-SE lumps are Ford/Mazda/Yamaha-designed.

I thought it was just the 1.8 and 2.0 Zetec/Zetec-E/Zetec-R lumps that were Ford-only but I just google-fu'd and it appears that some of the 1.6 are too.

So - depends on what Zetec you have, I guess... ;)

The 1596cc Zetec-SE is what I have. Says Zetec-S on the top of my engine but am sure it's part of the Zetec-SE group.

Just to add confusion, the all alloy Zetec SE as used in Fiestas and Pumas etc. was originaly known as the Sigma. Someone at Ford needs a good beating for the amount of confusion this stupid naming system has caused.

I expect they will want to bring out a "Duratec" trim level soon. Perhaps the really basic trims levels should refer to older engines e.g.

Mondeo Valencia
Fiesta Essex
CMax Pinto

Did Ford not release Zetec in repsonse to GMs ECOTEC (just to confuse things) or was it t'other way round?

I was out racing last night in my Mondeo Estate.

I was neck and neck with this Ferarri but then Zetec kicked in and I left him in a trail of smoke.

VVT = Toyota Variable Valve Wotsit

no that it matters, but for clarification:

VVT-i = Variable Valve Timing (intelligence) (basically similar concept to non-performance VTEC - i.e. economy)

VVTL-i = Variable Valve Timing (with) Lift (intelligence) = performance (8.5k rpm VTEC equivalent)

Wasn't Zetec the name of the Ford F1 engine at one time too? I'm thinking back when Schumacher was at Benetton and they had Ford engines.

Pfft! Lies tbh!

Ecotec has been around since 1994/95 cant remember which. I remember my friends old Cav 2.0l was basically an X20XEV and that was an M reg!

my parents old vectra was an ecotec and that was 97, so definitely before 2000 as already said. :)

ST Duratec but just a badged Zetec its even got Zetec engraved on the head.
