Will be waiting until the PROPER next generation.
I'll be waiting for the games that actually utilise this power! You can get cards costing no more than £150 that will play the most graphically demanding games all bells & whistles on a decent system. Some people have got more money than sense!

My 4870X2 can't handle Empire @ 1920x1200 4xAA 16xAF all-Ultra so I doubt a 4850 can.

Unless by "all bells & whistles" you mean "a few things on medium @ 1024x768 with no AA"

So if the 4750 lies between the 4830 and the 4850 according to guru3d, where does the 4770 stand in terms of performance?

Price of the 4890 sounds a bit much considering the price cuts which have been announced on the 4870s.

Damn right its not, as its our team doing it ey. ;)

Nvidia changed the first number, overclocked them, stuck them back out at higher prices.

ATi are changing the 3rd number, overclocking them, and sticking them back out at higher prices.

Jesus how thick am i, your right, its not the same at all, ATi's changing the 3rd number instead of the first, how the hell did i miss that, so im just off outside to give meself a flogging, sorry all. :o

To be fair nvidia didnt just do that once though, they kept on doing it with the same part :D

8800GTS -> 9800GTX -> 9800GTX+ -> GTS250 -> ?

When will those green monkeys stop!

Saves money on R&D that's for sure.

yea but neither does crysis + that is the demo at least wait until the full games here.

if you ask me there really isn't anything that demanding for pc this year a 4850 or even 8800 gts/gt will be fine for most of the big releases.

personally selling / downgrading my rig and getting a 360 for sf IV and fifa fight night round 4 etc.

They have yet another cherry on top of the renaming.
Tomorrow, on the opening day of CeBIT 2009, Nvidia will formalize the name change of its Geforce 9800GTX+ performance segment card to become Geforce GTS 250 in order to integrate this GPU with its new product naming scheme.

What has just been revealed, however, is the company's strategic marketing plan to revitalize the flow of consumerism in its performance segment. The fact is, a major portion of Nvidia's success in such a situation lies with the objectivity of its product reviewers. Positive reviews will go a long way in influencing the general consensus of public opinion, and therefore the company has decided to "improve," or should we say manipulate its assets.

According to Hardware.fr, the following information details Nvidia's guidelines to boards partners regarding the GTS 250 launch:

March 3rd – Reviews go live of GTS 250 1GB fast boards (738/1100)

March 10th – GTS 250 1GB and 512MB fast boards (738/1100) available for sale.

March 17th – GTS 250 1GB slow boards (738/1000) available for sale.

NOTE: The older slow 1GB (1000MHz memory) boards should not go on sale till after March 17th. The only exceptions are if partners can overclock the memory on these to hit 1100MHz.

Simply put, Nvidia is sending out higher clocked GTS 250 cards to reviewers within the first week of launch, and is then sending out slower GTS 250 cards for the majority of sales from retailers like Newegg, NCIX, Micro Center, and other distributors.

Nvidia is suggesting that its board partners hide the existence of these higher clocked review cards by branding them as "overclocked" models to avoid market confusion. The note suggests that should partners wish to sell the slower cards with 1.0ns DDR3 modules (rated up to 1000MHz) prior to March 17th, the chips must be overclocked to at least 1100MHz, or the speed of the 0.8ns modules.

Moreover, it seems as if the company is concerned about its slower 9800GTX+ stock being rebranded to meet the specifications of the GTS 250. It needs to ensure it can fit cards with both fast and slow memory chips under one product name.

Nvidia are diabolical with their business tactics. All ATI are doing is releasing a faster card which has a slightly higher number, I fail to see the problem here?!?

Its not being marketed as a new generation. Its like the 8800ultra coming out, or an x850xt pe card. Consumers are aware that its just the same generation HD4k. Instead of simply adding suffixes ATI signify a position by its latter numbers when they dropped the whole xtx and pro monikers. Nvidia on the other hand are marketing this completely differently.

I don't understand why they are releasing a budget card on the new 40nm die and not the 48xx or 49xx on it yet?

They're using a lower transistor chip to get good yields for the new 40nm tech. If everything works fine they can move onto bigger chips.
