Amazon air coming to a town near you (or just london)

Total pipe dream.

Note the house they showcased in the video was like some rural manor. Won't work in inner city areas like high rise flats or terraced streets due to space constraints.

What's more likely to take-off (excuse the pun) is mobile parcel lockers in the form of an electric powered driver-less van, which is something Royal Mail is exploring.

So the only human element will be staff at the local mail centre or delivery office to load/unload the lockers on the van. The computer will plot a route to the drops, customers get given an ETA, van arrives at address, customer inputs a one-time use code which unlocks one of the lockers, customer removes packet and the van goes on its way.

That kind of setup could run 24/7 with very little expenditure, no fuel cost, no driver.

Electric is still a fuel cost no? or would it be solar panels?

Also isn't that pretty much the exact same as a what they do now without the driver?

The cost of electric charging would be negligible compared to traditional fuel, and solar cells on the roof of the van would certainly be a possibility. Electric vehicles need less maintenance also due to fewer mechanical parts.

The advantage of the driver-less system is the ability to micromanage deliveries, customers could change time slots on the fly and the computer would simply recalculate a new route. Things would become a lot more predictable and efficient.

Keep an eye out on checkout for a promotional credit when buying gift cards. Was offered £7 credit for buying £30 of gift cards and considering I buy so much from them it seemed rude not to take it. :o

The credit will only work on items sold by Amazon
