Anyone thinking of "free upgrading" to the 1070 from the 980ti? Benchmarks look decent around 5-10% increase from the 980ti to the 1070, extra 2GB vram & less power consumption.
Considering they will release at around £350 (hopefully) which I could probably make from my 980ti its not bad for no extra cash?
Worth it or not going forward?

I'll doubt you will get 350 fir your 980 ti now...

But if you do upgrade or side grade then you will lose less on your 1070 in the future.

It's a trade-off really. Whilst it beats a stock 980 Ti, it falls behind by ~7-15% overclock vs overclock. Custom models might get a little closer, but I doubt it'll actually beat an overclocked 980 Ti in raw performance. Of course, there's the extra VRAM, lower power consumption and the fact it'll continue getting driver tweaks whilst the 980 Ti won't to consider.

If it's costing you nothing at all and you're not trading a nice custom 980 Ti for a reference 1070, it might be worth it.

how long was it before the 1080 was open to pre orders or was it the same day? I just want to have my bank account ready for when its ready to pre order, the 3rd party cards look crap msi's looks nice but I wont go back to msi after the dodgey widespread fan issue with the 970

You may want to look at this before you make a decision

According to his tests 980ti is a better overclocker. But then again test were not done on 3rd party 1080/1070

1080 doesn't look to shabby in these reviews have to admit :) around 30% over 1070. If only it was priced at £500 I think nvidia would have a winner like 970 was back in 2014.

Another way of looking at the attractiveness of 1070 over 1080 and vice versa is resale value. If you get 1080 for £650 (let's say asus) and sell it for £550 when you upgrade next time round (let's say in 1yr time 1080ti), you are down £100.
The same can happen in 1070 scenario if you buy for £400 and sell for £300. The only difference is the initial price.

thanks bud I remember the 2pm but wasnt sure if it was the day before or day after. fingers crossed I can nab a card at 2pm if it is. did the site go down by any chance or was they prepared for the high traffic

The site went to ****. I think the cards went up slightly early, maybe 1:55 or something. From then on it was hit or miss if the pages would load, at least for me.

Then again I didn't actually try to order one, so I don't know how that was for people

Yeah I think you're right with this. If you plan to re-sell, perhaps when the 1080 Ti is released, you're probably looking at losing the same amount for both cards. The only difference may be that while the 1080Ti wrecks the 1080 in terms of price and performance, the 1070 may sit confidently at it's current positioning, which will reinforce it's resale value compared to the 1080. That's just random estimation though

hmm...you may be right. 1070 seems to be targeted to value for money / sweet 1440p spot audience and if priced right (no more than £400) will be very popular and hold it's value. Whereas 1080 is for people who want latest and greatest, but it's only about 25% better than 1070. 1080 seems to be this weird stop over before you get full fat card. Once 1080ti comes out it will (I think) be around 2x1070 performance in which case nobody will be interested in 1080. Unless 1080ti is singnificantly more expensive e.g. £900, so 1080 would have it's firm place in the product portfolio.

The situation with the 970/980 was even more crazy, where it was something like a 10-15% difference between the two. Though there was that 3.5GB of "proper" VRAM nonsense...

This is the thing now is that if the 1070 matches the 980ti who is gonna buy a second hand 980ti when they could just get a brand new card for the same price? As soon as 1070 comes out you are probably right in that getting £300 could be a struggle so hence I was deciding to sell now or wait for 1080ti/Volta cards and not worry about re-sell value.
Indeed looking at further benchmarks with different setups and OCvsOC the cards are pretty even and the 980ti still holds it own against the 1070. I OCd my KFA2 InfiniteBlack 980ti recently and scored 2498 in heaven @1080p with a 1503mhz boost clock & 4000mem with 70c temp so overall it might not be the best option to side grade as at 1440p the 980ti does a great job anyway.

The other reason I was looking at the 1070 including its re-sale value is that now the 1080 has released at such a high price the 1080ti must release above that I reckon around £650+ which for me is a lot of money to upgrade considering the price drop the 980ti will get, so I am leaning more to missing Pascal completely if I don't side grade.
