I would suspect that they are being overly cautious in their spec. My 700W semi-fanless PSU is happily powering my Skylake 6700K at 4.4GHz (with too much power), a GTX 9800Ti, two pumps, Aquaero, Farbwerk and lighting and it's not breaking enough of a sweat to even need to spin up its fan - despite the intake being pointed at the carpet. 1200W Should be more than enough...but as long as it doesn't cost you in inefficiency for the load you're running, who cares?! The headroom is always good for the future or just for knowing that it's not a problem.

It's for when you want to do quad-sli... not needed at all for 2... you can use it safely for the fan splitter :)

And you know I've been running my CPU at 4.5GHz & both GPUs at 2.05/11 without it breaking a sweat...

As for PSU... over-rating is good... PSUs are most efficient and quiet at 50% load or less.

I notice from some of your many pictures ( ever thought of using spoiler tags like you are meant to ?)

That you did some of the stripping/building of the GFX cards on that soft foam , did you do that a lot when contructing this build ?

He does, however, have a point about the polystyrene. I've never had a problem from using just a wooden bench or a piece of cardboard rather than a special, grounded anti-static mat. Polystyrene is very good at generating static electricity so I'd uncomfortable about using it near any expensive hardware. Thankfully nothing seems to have come to any harm but it might be something to change for your next build.

Huh? Only images wider than 1280 pixels have to go in spoiler tags.

This is a build log... if you don't want pictures don't enter.

EDIT: Seems I was late to the game.

All the images you reported are of the correct size (1280 maximum width) and do not need to be spoilered. Thanks - Armageus

I report him for being a word that would get me suspension...

Static does not make it fail straight away most of the time , it may cause problems at some random
point in the future , if he is unlucky

For a moment I felt bad for posting pictures on a build log then I realised it's okay if they are the right size which they are.
Thank you for confirming guys. :)

Regarding the polystyrene, I used it because I had it and I couldn't find anywhere to buy a proper anti-static work bench. I would've if I could. If you know where I can find one please let me know.

You'd be fine with a piece of cardboard - I believe OCUK supply some particularly fine cardboard wrapped around every order ;) Just that polystyrene generates static - you'll have noticed bits of it sticking to plastic. Likely to be one of those things that 99 times out of 100, you'll get away with it....but when you're talking £800 graphics cards

I don't buy cheap £800 cards... Mine are watercooled Titans, man! :p

I thought they might be....but if I'm honest, I couldn't be bothered to look up the price :D

Armageus: what's the ruling on links to competitors when it comes to products that OCUK don't sell? (or if they do, I couldn't find anti-static mats in the search) Is this OK or not? Don't want to see this descend into closure again.

£1,230 a pop (£1,100 the GPU plus £100 the block and £30 the back plate) assembling not included.

I don't have an issue with either of those links. The general ruling is no linking to competitors whose main business is in competition with OcUK (i.e. other computer etailers), or no linking to general sites such as ebay/amazon etc where the products for sale are in a category that OcUK stock (e.g. graphics cards on amazon for example).

OcUK don't stock Anti-static mats from what I can see, and so the amazon link is fine (as just links to anti static mats), but even the other link is fine, as they are primarily an electronics specialist (and not linking to their specific computer section / no other computer products on the linked page)

Build update:

  • I've been busy at work but I still managed to move my project forward, slightly.
  • The pump that wasn't sending PWM signal was kindly replaced by EKWB and now it's working properly.
  • The second pump is making a strange noise below 70% power so that will also be replaced. EKWB kindly accented to replace the whole block, pump and pump top, no delivery/collection charge. Top marks for them!
  • The Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 was faulty and causing system instability proven on multiple mother boards and that went back to the seller, fault confirmed and refund issued. Very disappointing quality control for Dominators!
  • New Rampage V Ed 10 ordered and installed. Windows reinstalled. No more issues.
  • Windows 10 Pro Retail that I bought from a third party A...n seller was in fact OEM version even though I paid £150. Flagged it and got a full refund and they also let me keep the OEM version for myself. Hurray for big A! :D
  • New G-Skill memory bought DDR4-3000 15-15-15-35. Acceptable performance but unacceptable looks so that will be returned.
  • New cables from CableMod ordered and installed. Looks improved.
  • New memory ordered from Taiwan, apparently limited edition. Pictures below. Very impressed. They even give you a cloth to wipe the chrome shiny. :)
  • All that is left is to have the new pump replaced and installed and put some colour into those tubes.

Conclusion: Damn, no mater how much money you spend you just can't catch a break from all the issues a build can have.
