Covid or should I say the pandemic did so much damage. It messed up supply chains everywhere, part of which obviously hit the PS5 when everyone was stuck at home. Also game development was totally hampered as a result.

I still can't see the point of a Pro when as I mentioned above, developers can't even get 60fps out when the PS5 is well capable of doing it. Hell Pacific Drive, which I'm playing at the moment targets 4k30 (stated by the developer) and barely manages that. We've got games still coming out for the PS4 too. I don't care how much beefy hardware we've got coming - if a game isn't upto a decent performance standard then its somewhat pointless imo.
This is what I'm saying. Why can't they just reduce the graphics settings and give us 60fps as standard? Every console gen is the same. 30fps. I remember when my ex girlfriends sister came into my living room and was watching me play Crazy Taxi 2 on Dreamcast. She said and I quote "oh my god look at how smooth it looks" She was still playing PS1. Next week she went and bought a Dreamcast. Smoothness is severely underrated.

I think devs have become lazy in optimising game’s especially AAA ones. I imagine the Pro will be used as a brute force approach to getting higher frame rates. But the lack of games other than remakes/remasters puts me off in considering it. I really don’t want to be playing the same games again generations over as it seems to be now.

Will be interesting to see what comes of a Pro but have no interest in ordering one this time.

Latest video from MLID from supposedly internal documents.

In Summary the PS5 Pro:
  • Is ~45% faster than the PS5 in Raw (Unoptimized) Rendering Performance
  • Is 2-4x faster than the PS5 in Ray Tracing
  • Has 67 TFLOPs of FP16
  • Has 300 TOPs of 8-bit Computation
  • Utilizes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an Al-Accelerated DLSS Competitor
The new PSSR looks to be better than FSR 2/3, but will hold any and all judgment till release.

So it does look like they are trying to aim for 60fps quality mode and an up to 120fps in performance.

But looking at the specs, gotta be £599 minimum
I was hoping the 5 Pro would be more like £499 but with those specs I think you are right. Maybe I’ll just go ahead and get a slim now rather than wait any longer

My issue with the last Pro was you were paying a lot more money for better performance for half a generation's worth of games. I'd want to see what sort of commitment the devs of existing titles make to supporting a PS5 Pro before I'd even contemplate it, especially given the sort of price it'll be. Plus with Sony themselves saying there are no major first-party titles due this year it's going to be a hard sell.

If it does materialise I can easily imagine it'll be a single Pro Digital Edition SKU, with the existing optical drive available as an extra purchase.

Got a bet with a friend that this will launch at a max of $699 USD - can't be more than that surely? :o

That’d be my guess. I reckon they’ll reduce the price of the regular PS5 slightly so we end up with :-

PS5 slim digital- £300
PS5 slim disc - £400
PS5 Pro - £600
Yeh that I can agree with although I would say:
- PS5 slim digital- £329
- PS5 slim disc - £399
- PS5 Pro - £599
I feel like the disc drive will come down in price.

So some latest reports from insider gaming

System Memory

Standard PlayStation 5 – 448 GB/s (14 GT/s)
PlayStation 5 Pro – 576 GB/s (18GT/s) – A 28% increase over the standard console.

Also outlined is that the PlayStation 5 Pro’s system memory is more efficient than the standard console, so the bandwidth gain may increase by over 28%.

CPU

The CPU is identical to the standard PlayStation 5, however, the Pro has a ‘High CPU Frequency Mode”, which takes the CPU to 3.85GHz – A 10% increase over the standard console.
In High CPU Frequency Mode, more power is allocated to the CPU and will downclock the GPU by around 1.5%, resulting in roughly 1% lower GPU performance.

Audio

The ACV in the PlayStation 5 Pro runs at a higher clock speed over the standard PlayStation 5, resulting in the ACM library having 35% more performance.
  • More convolution reverbs can be processed
  • More FFT or IFFT can be processed

GPU (Previously revealed)

  • Rendering 45% faster than PS5
  • 2-3x Ray-tracing (x4 in some cases)
  • 33.5 Teraflops
  • PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling) upscaling/antialiasing solution
  • Support for resolutions up to 8K is planned for future SDK version
  • Custom machine learning architecture
  • AI Accelerator, supporting 300 TOPS of 8 bit computation / 67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point

In addition: 30 WGPs running specialised BVH8 traversal shaders vs 18 WGPs running BVH4 tranversal shaders on the standard PlayStation 5.
It’s also understood that as a means to make the PlayStation 5 Pro as “competitive” (not my phrasing here) as possible, it will have a detachable disc drive which will be identical to the latest iteration of the standard PlayStation 5, and 1TB of storage space.
Currently, the PlayStation 5 Pro is running on SKD 9.00, and SKD 10.00 is expected in Fall 2024

Classic make it 99 to make it seem cheaper :p . I thought the ps5 disc was already around 400 anyway?
Haha - the most basic of marketing moves :p
The PS5 disc is currently £480, with the digital coming in at £390. I expect those to come down a little - maybe not as much as I have put in my post.

They both look interesting but I’ll wait for reviews first!

I’ve just spent £80 on the PS5 physical release of Baldurs Gate 3 so need to reign in my spending this month!

I was going to ask if the PS5 Pro was worth waiting for but I found out this afternoon that Amazon Prime members can get the PS5 Slim (with disc) for £389 with a £20 discount on the current price just for Prime Members.

If the PS5 Pro comes out for the holiday season, i.e.Thanksgiving time, that's what, 7-8 months away? So PS5 Slim for £389? Worth going for now?
