should i get the hd player?

HDMI will be brighter and colours should be better. Digital is always better imo. You will notice the difference but I am not sure it is worth the money. It most cetainly does not have the same wow factor as Blu Ray did for me... That could be just because I had Blu Ray first though..And my 360 is on Component not HDMI.

is the UK getting the HD-DVD addon with 5 Free HD-DVDs as they have in the US? If we are it might be worth hanging on for.

Good timing; they announced it a couple of days ago at the HD-DVD promotional press conference at the IFA Consumer Electronics Show.

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=65757

The free movies bundle promotion is coming to Europe! 5 free movies free with each player. The titles are still being chosen - but MIGHT include Miami Vice, Batman Begins, King Kong, Chronicles of Riddick, and Troy.

In the US they extended this offer to 360 HD-DVD add on buyers but not sure whether this will apply to Europe.

cheers, so your saying its a good bit of kit, will i notice any diffence?
You'll be knocked sideways by it thats for sure. I bought mine a few years ago, but it now sits in the cupboard as I've recently bought the Toshiba HD-E1 standalone player. The 360 player is tops and you get the lovely backlit green remote too as a bonus.

I did a review on my Toshiba and compared it to the 360 player, which I had for a lot longer. Have a look because in it I say a lot of positive things about the 360 player over my Tosh. Especially the fact that the difference between Component & HDMI looks minimal to me.

hi

im really interested in getting the xbox hd drive addon for £99 from something station

is it worth it, i have a hd tv and xbox premium but will also eventually be upgrading to the elite, £99 seems a bargain

cheers

Seems a good price well worth it , playing a hd-dvd on that add-on compared to standard would be huge with a decent tv of course .

Yep the full length backlit one you can find in the accessories bit on xbox.com.

I'd say it's about even. Stuff like Heroes, Shrek3, Transformers, Lord of the Rings and The Matrix are massive beneficiaries for HD-DVD.

Transformers isnt out for a month or two, and I dont believe a release date has even been stated for LOTR, I would however state that The Matrix has sold in the bucket load (I have one of the packs), and no doubt Heroes will also sell very well indeed after its release a few days ago.

Definatly get one

I got one when they were first released and havnt looked back :)

I agree with the above in that you stop noticing the HD-ness of it after a while but as soon as you watch a SD-DVD you'll notice quite a big difference

i think this link is ok (if not then please can a passing mod remove it :)). quite a big selection of HD-DVD's at pretty decent prices. they also sell Blu-Ray for anyone interested

Very tempted to get one of these at the £100 quid mark :)

Could slowly start to sell off some of my DVD's and have a smaller more manageable collection too.....hmmmm :)

I wouldn't but then no HD media currently interests me. It's a lot of bang for your buck though so I doubt you'd regret it!

got mine for a little over 80 quid on a very well known site, was well worth it, the picture quality blows away my dvd's completely using component leads. Its the same difference i noticed going from scratchy VHS tapes to DVD all those years ago :D Price wise im paying 10-15 quid a disc off american sites. Everything is region free so no worries there. Really looking forward to the ultimate Blade Runner coming out on HD for chrimbo.

Only thing i dont really like is the remote which while functional, sucks. Havnt figured a way of opening the HD tray with it yet, it always opens the XBox tray instead.

But it will certainly do me until affordable multi standard players come out for a decent price.

That was one of my major complaints, so I bought a Toshiba HD-E1 because it was dirt cheap. Sadly the remote on that is utter pants, it's not even backlit.
