should i get the hd player?

I think you can only get 480p over component with movies, something about copy protection.

Just put a couple of DVD's in the HD player and you get this...

Im using component leads so maybe it does upscale a little or is this normal DVD resolution?

Here's how it works:

Component = 720p/1080i/p for games - 720p for HD-DVDs - 480p for DVDs

VGA = full support upto 1080p for games and HD-DVDs, upto 1080p upscaling for DVDs.

So currently the only way to get 1080p from a Xbox 360 Premium while watching HD-DVDs is over VGA.

The 360 vga output is mediocore at best. I have the HD-DVD drive, and a 1080p LCD TV. Dark pictures suffer from noise, and it takes a lot of tweaking to get the colours right.

I imagine there will be none of these problems via HDMI with an 360 Elite. For the record; watchin BluRays on the PS3 via HDMI 1080p@24fps is amazing, I think the Elite will bring similar performance for the 360's HD-DVD drive.

Just got a 400GB external hard drive and I downloaded some HD wmv files, legal of course and play it on my 360 looks great on the tv.

imho by the time you have got the x360 drive working on your pc (with Power DVD@ £50+) and any other hardware you might need , you might as well have got a stand alone player.

Obviously if you are using the hd-dvd drive thru the x360 then its ok - I also hope they have improved PowerDvd since I tried it in April /May time, it was just a huge PITA even on a specifically built C2D shuttle (obviously Vista updates could have helped also since this time)

Transformers isnt out for a month or two, and I dont believe a release date has even been stated for LOTR, I would however state that The Matrix has sold in the bucket load (I have one of the packs), and no doubt Heroes will also sell very well indeed after its release a few days ago.

Isn't Band of Brothers coming on HD-Dvd. Thats one of the few items I'd buy a player and buy dvds for.

VGA = full support upto 1080p for games and HD-DVDs, upto 1080p upscaling for DVDs.

A lot of 42" 1080p panels only accept up to 720p over VGA which a pain, It's one of the reasons I upgraded to an Elite for 1080p HDMI goodness with my new Tosh 42X3030D.

just wondering...

would it be better quality wise to connect it to your Pc rather than the 360 ?

If on the PC, does the remote still work ?

very tempted to get one now :p

This pretty much sums it up for me also.

so basically if i had an elite that would give me full support (720p/1080p) for hd dvd using hdmi

even though i would only get a max of 720p on my display?

If you like TV on DVD then your best bet is HD DVD at the minute with the only real exception being Lost which will be exclusively Blu Ray.
