Seems to work in the fantasy world that zombies exist in, so...

I've got several shotguns, lots of ammo, swords and armour.... that'll see the dead buggers off 
Assuming Im in my house when it begins and that they are walking zombies not running -
Check on parents, take them with me if they are alive. If not run away.
Phone some friends see if they can help at all and if they are alive ofc.
Head to the house of someone I know of who collects guns. Hope they are zombies and take their guns
Get a car, learn to drive really quickly, or get someone else to drive. To the nearest shopping mall.
Once there look for any other survivors. (Since everyones plans almost always involve going to a shopping center theres bound to be lots of other zombie witted people to help.) Attempt to empty and secure the center of zombies.
Use it as a base. Slowly spread out from the center everyday to look for help or survivors, return at night for defense. Once the resources are depleted there, make way to another center.
Repeat last 3 steps until death or rescue.

I live in a city of > 8 million people and I don't own a car...hmm

Being with lots of people can be a flaw, there is always one who thinks one of the zombies if there best friend and tries to save them, but gets bitten and takes about 3 of you down, or someone has to run after the family dog leading everyone else to go save them, losing most of you in doing so.
And as for shopping centre nice idea, but its going to take a while to secure the metro centre if its possible.
I don't know what i would do, probably all i said above that is flawed lol.

Yeh but I know not to do that, id tell MY group not to do that. And all the people at the shopping center, who like me have a plan know not to do that and would tell their group not to do that.
SO for every group there would be a leader who has a plan and knows the do's and don'ts for surviving a zombie holocaust. Meaning around 3-4 people who know what they are doing and about 10-20 who dont but would follow the 4 leaders.

you're in NY dude... you could probably pick up an assault riffle for $2.51
I'd modify my car by welding sharp stuff to it and encourage friends to do the same. Then we'd all race around getting bonus points for killing zombies much like in Carmageddon.
The fact I have no knowledge of welding, basic materials, or a safe workshop where the work can be carried out are minor issues.

Boatload of dried food and stuff to the nearest off-shore structure (with water supply).
Not totally sure how I'll get there yet though. Probably would steal one of the pretentious boats at Brighton Marina and go from there to lighthouses around the South coast, going from one to another as needed.
I'd need guns, obviously. There's a ghetto/rundown street nearby. There'll be loads of shotguns and other useful weapons there. On my way there I'd use a combination of petrol mower/Axe/Sledgehammer once I get out of my car.
