FIFA 08 Official Thread

You know nothing about the Konami engine, other than it's old, tell me how does an old engine make it a bad thing? A game engine can be heavily modified and tweaked over a period of time, for instance look a the ISI Gmotor engine, and how that has been modified on the PC, rFactor made my ISI themselves lacks some major features that Simbin added to the engine when they bought the rights to use the engine for their GTR games, but you would know that off course.

PES2008 certainly does not have good crowds but if you want to say they are worse than Fifa? go to Old Trafford and take a corner at the away end, tell me you that does not make you cringe in this day and age.

Fifa is scripted and I have already explained why I think that, mainly the AI boosting if you can't see that for yourself then you have really not played single player too much or even tried legendary mode, go test yourself play against Barcelona then play against Runcorn, you will get the same game from both teams, which IMO is shocking.

You are the one bringing PES into this thread about Fifa, I am talking about Fifa, nothing to do with PES, you are the one trying to turn it into another Fifa v PES thread, not me. For example - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10183039&postcount=145

Just thought I'd say that the PES engine is old, and there have been faults with it for a long time that haven't been fixed. Which Nokkon (and several members across many posts, and many different PES/FIFA threads) have pointed out.

EA managed to take a brave step last year by rewriting Fifa for the 360 from scratch, it didn't really pay off last year but we were promised that the engine would be the building blocks for something very different with the years to come :)

I've owned PES/FIFA on many different platforms and played them all very religiously and played through them all very thoroughly.

I cannot believe that you can't concede that this years Fifa is a very big step forward, whilst this years PES is just adding a few extra things to an already dated engine?

Meh... I enjoy both, you don't... difference of opinion - wouldn't be the first time, certainly wont be the last :)

Fifa 08 is miles better than 07 there is no denying that, but it still has some work to go IMO before it really feels fluid and natural, I am not saying it's a terrible game, but some aspects of it clearly got overlooked this time round, and they are at least moving forward from the dross they have been churning out.

How does being an old engine not make it bad? Well, for a start, it's struggling now, they are pumping in higher resolution textures and the game struggling to render it (hence jerkiness). You're also limited as to what you can do in it, you can improve what a player can do, but it has a ceiling, something that could be removed with a new engine.

Again, why the snidey little remarks at the end? It's very predictable and very annoying? You say I am 'verbally abusive' yet you do that ALL the time.

Is it annoying? Yes, I suppose, but it's no more annoying than PES. I want the crowds to look better, and in fairness, they should, but attention to detail has been put elsewhere. This is another reason I want PES to move to a new engine, so that it can open up newer modes, more detailed stadia, more teams, leagues etc..

Is there scripting? Yes. Unfortunately it's needed in any football game, however the level of AI scripting is definitely less than that of PES. As I am typing this I am playing on legendary difficulty against Northampton. I'm winning 2-1 and it's a cracking challenge.

If you mean adding difficulties to teams is AI scripting, then so be it. But it's just making it more difficult, the computer can see more space and passes into it, however it's harder against a team like Barcelona than Runcorn due to iindividual player stats meaning a lot more such as vision, crossing, volleys etc..
The difference level between semi-pro and legendary is no more than 3 star and 5 star on PES.

You always seem to want to paint me as a PES hater. I'm not, I love the series. However I am not blind to the fact that the series is out-dated and needs a radical improvement.

Go to your User CP in the top left, there's an option called 'Buddy/Ignore List'

add a name to that and away they go.

Cheers. I don't know if I would want to. Whilst some of his stuff is rubbish, when he puts effort into posts they are actually quite good. I've read some cracking posts from him in the past. When he's not trolling he's a good poster, so I think it's only fair that I see what he has to say.

I never had any jerks on the demo, I know some people did but it was very smooth for me, and honestly I added in so many hi-res textures in the PC version and it never jerked either so I really do not think the engine is struggling in that area Nokkon. Unless off course they are going to far for the actual console to cope, which off course would be a mistake, I noticed slowdown in the cut scenes and instant replays which is annoying off course.

I never said you hate PES, I am saying I am not the one trying to debate Fifa v PES, Fifa is it's own game and should be debated on it's own merits or failings.

They are two very different games in the way they play, Fifa is the more slow fluid approach whilst pes is all out end to end fast paced football. Why the two cant co-exist in some peoples minds is beyond me...they both have faults and its no doubt that the new fifa is a much greater step forward that the incremental step that is pes but then again it had more ground to gain. I do prefer fifa this time round...imo its a slightly more realistic game of football and again imo far less scripted than pes. It also spanks pes in the graphics and atmosphere department, Pes is really far too flat the stadiums are lifeless and the engine is in desperate need of an overhaul. All I can say is Fifa can only get better...

Bang on SS-89, I think the games compliment themselves quite well, Fifa is technical and slower paced, Pro Evo arcadey and fast paced, probably more fun as well, its what we all know and love, and are comfortable with.

Its still probably a thing that if they could marry the two, the atmosphere, the teams, with pro evo's gameplay, it would be near the perfect game.

I think in 2 or 3 years time, FIFA is going to be amazing if they keep developing it, the mini game at the start with Ronaldhino running at the speed it does feels like proper football, it looks great, it will be great when they get that level of control in the full game, at the moment it seems to just be a little sluggish in comparison to that.

I bought Fifa friday along with Skate and Sega Rally, on Wednesday I bought Halo 3, NHL08 and Madden 08, i played halo for 5 minutes to check it out, NHL for maybe an hour, and ive not even opened the other games yet, FIFA im really enjoying, and I love that they have taken the time to make nice achievements, rather than the stupid ones from last year that only hardcore geeks like McDaniel were able to get :p
