YAY, another fuel hike!

Dont see what peoples problem is... it's greener, better for my engine and it seems to be giving me better MPG, why people feel the need to dis-proove almost everything I say is beyond me :)

Because most of the time experience tells us its complete;

</Pictures> that you saw earlier ;)

Well I work out that on a full tank it would be 427 Miles... so its an increase..

dude its all in the head

this has been prooved time and time again, unless your enginge is specificly meant for SUL, it doesnt change a jot

at least if your going to get ripped for it, buy V Power / Bp Ultimate once in a while, as the cleaning detergents will probably do your engine some good

supermarket SUL doesnt.

Oh wait, I know Fox and Oblivious are always on a mission to do that.

its not greener

its certainly not better for your engine unless your buying V-Power or Bp Ultimate. run of the mill supermarket SUL doesnt have special detergents, its just normal supermarket fule with a higher RON value

and it doesnt give an increase in MPG big enough to offset its extra cost.

says it all.

Yes but what we are saying is that while it "may" be giving you better Miles per Gallon, it probably *isn't* giving you better £ per Mile. And it is the latter that generally is what a MINI driver usually cares about...

ffs I wasnt disputing that in the first place, it was Fox going all high and mighty on me asking why I use Ultimate in my 'poxy' Mini

He is completely right though in this instance. Its a complete waste of money, you are getting an increased range due to subconcious changes to your driving style due to you knowing you are filled with BPU. Your engine does not benefit from super unleaded.

And FWIW, v-power is actually cheaper than BPU, so if you insist that your engine is a unique one-off that does benefit, then why not benefit even further and use that instead :p

so why are you supprised then when all of us (not just fox) are mocking you for using it

you've allready admitted as much it does nothing for your car, you do it for self esteem reasons

Alrighty then, ill take it on... i'll see what difference I loose (If any) on a full tank of 95 when I come to fuel up next time, and see how much I get out of each on an average month.

You will get less from the '95, because you are in the mindstate that it should be less.

Its amazing the difference in economy that i get between fuelcard tesco petrol and personal credit card tesco petrol. Same fuel, i think i drive about the same, but no, when i buy fuel it always lasts a bit longer because i subconciously drive with more consideration for it. You are doing the same with BPU, there is no other explanation.

No it wasn't. It was nothing to do with that - using it in your car is pointless, it's that simple. Just as it was pointless to use in my Mondeo (and why I never did) and arguably, pointless in my current car as well.

Even though it says on the fuel cap and in the manual that you should use 98 octane fuel? ;)

I'm supportive of this increased duty. Here's how the break down looks at the moment:

Has increasing prices ever altered the demand for fuel?

If it hasn't, what purpose does the increase serve?

Its to help pay for all the civil servants.

Thats all there is to it.

It can only be that, the hospitals, police, army, navy and councils all say they have no money, despite supposedly being given more money than ever before.

Its all a great big load of rubbish.

no, not a myth, 95oct for me does on average 270miles (top was 305), 99oct does 300miles (top was 320). it totally depends on engine though i guess, high compression engines will prefer 99oct.

yes you could say it depends on roads your driving and how heavy footed i was, but thats the way i see it.

anyway, costs mean i use the cheap stuff anyway, the increase in range doesnt do any better in £ per mile.

Of course - compare the US with Europe for example. Also look what happened with the prices increases in '73 and '79.

This hike hit me hard in the wallet this morning. 106.9 per litre for V-Power at my local Shell and, alhtough it has been over £1/litre for a while, I really noticed this time the £ counter going up quicker than the litre counter. On a full tank I think there were 4 more pounds on the bill than litres in the tank. :(

Just paid 94.9p per litre at tesco. There was a massive queue and as I got to the front this guy shut the pump off and reprogrammed the new higher price!

Luckily I had a 5p off per litre token so 57litres was just over £50.

The roads are VERY poor in Bristol. I would pay the money if the roads were well maintained.
Too right - I've had 1 tyre written off due to a pothole, and a friend has had 2!

I try and use the bike for short journeys, but it's not always ideal for when I need to carry stuff or when it rains. :(

Moving over to veg oil it tempting tho... I don't really do the miles right now to justify the hassle, as I'd have to go from a lucas pump to a bosch one.

I'm in two minds on this one. Having just bought a 4L V8 car purely for enjoyment purposes, I don't mind stumping up- I admit it's an extravagance as I rarely really need a car for practical purposes, (although it is very useful) let alone a 4L V8. I see it as "pay to play".

On the other hand I ride a motorbike to work (Hammersmith from Guildford) every day and the fuel costs are starting to hit hard. I ride a bike because it's ultra-practical, causes the minimum amount of pollution, negligible congestion, and above all my journey takes 40 minutes as opposed to 2.5 hours. It's still way cheaper by bike, but for how long? And to be honest I'd give up my well-paid management-level job long before I'd consider paying through the teeth for the poor, expensive, unreliable so called "service" that is Public Transport.

If I thought the money made on fuel, cigarettes, electricity, gas, fatty foods, consumer goods etc was being put to good use to address the problems or society, I'd be happy. But it doesn't- same as always it gets spent on £1200-per-meter carpet in parliament, big backhanders to government preferred contractors and countless useless quangos.

I just wish our government would consider giving realistic options rather than just fining everyone for everything they do that's considered irresponsible.
