2007 Japanese GP - Race 15/17

I don't think the article says that the FIA admitted responsibility.

Taken from the article.

The FIA accepted after the race that the email had been delayed in getting through to Ferrari and announced that, to avoid a repeat situation in the future, it would now issue both paper and electronic notices to teams.

Yeah that doesnt actually say it was the FIAs fault (which it may have been dont get me wrong)
It just says the e-mail had been delayed, it looks like it was sent to the e-mail address which could only be accessed by a computer that either wasnt switched on or wasnt being checked.

There was a communication breakdown but the cause has not stated clearly as far as I can see.

Yea, there is a communication delay to Ferrari. The FIA knew that have apologised for it. They are trying to make this situation better in the future if it was to happen again.

It cost Ferrari a very good chance to take the race win. Its over now anyway, time to move on to the next race.

Hamilton only has to finish 5th or above making Kimi's chances impossible for the title.

wonder_lander, did'nt realise you went to Japan and watched the race. Great stuff. Looking forward to the pictures...

Background info:

My uncle won a charity auction at a Japanese Themed event at the back end of this year for 2 weekend passes to the Japanese F1, flights and accommodation. As a keen F1 fan myself, he's a rugby league and footie fan, I was asked to go.....I nearly bit his hand off!

The trip was obviously a long time off but as the time got closer the excitement grew!

We flew out from Heathrow on Wednesday 26th October arriving in Japan (Narita Airpot) in the middle of Thursday afternoon. A quick 2 hour taxi ride from the airport and we where in our hotel in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo. I have plenty of pics but won't bore you guys!

We already decided we would only attend Practice 3, Qualy and the race to give us some time to visit other areas of Japan.

Anyway weather on Thursday was a humid high twenties and cloudy, Friday was fantastic sunshine and 30's, we where looking forward to a spectacular grand prix weekend!

Onto the F1 bits:

The race organizers had restricted access to the Fuji speedway to just shuttle buses. Depending on the stand you where in determined where you needed to get your shuttle bus from, for us that was Mishima. We therefore needed a cab to the nearest train station (Shinjuku), a subway triain to Tokyo Central Station and then a train down to Mishima, In total that was around 1hr 30 mins so we started from our hotel at 7am. From Mishima there was a constant fleet of coaches to take us the 1hr to the Fuji speedway.

Once you apprach the speedway there was a tailback of about 1km which seemed to take around 40 minutes to get us to the drop off area:

We then had walk a snake up through the speedway plaza to get to the actual track and our seats.

Our stand was D which was on the outside of turns 1 and 2, great place to see some first lap action we hoped!

All these pictures where taken before practice 3 and you can see the wonderful weather!

More to follow....

Didn't take any pictures of qualy due to the weather and my cameras poor performance in the conditions!

After qualy we left straight away even though the porsche racing was on. We knew it would be fun and games getting away and sure enough because of the rain one of the bus routes got too boggy so there was a delay of nearly 2 hours for us getting on the bus!

Got back to our hotel tired and wet, ordered room service and arranged a room service breakfast for 6am the following morning!

Race day to follow!

The end, was a fantastic trip and a great race to watch. Organisation by the Japanese was spot on for race day although a bit wooly on Saturday!

Looks like you got one of the decent seats. Did you see any of the ones that they're having to refund because you couldn't see the track?

The FIA didnt apologise for any fault on their part, Ferrari 'supposedly' didnt receive the email on time, now if all the other teams received this email in time, it was either Ferraris fault with their email or Ferrari ignoring the info sent to them. As a result of this the FIA decided to remove any possible doubt in the future by hand delivering this type of info - end of.

I finally saw the race, wasn't Massa pitstop 13 minutes before the end a cover up to a team order?

And regarding the intermediates, I still have to read all the comments in the thread but I find it very hard to believe Ferrari did not get that memo when everyone else including the commentators did, it looked like they took a gamble and lost.

they were falling off the track behind the safety car on inters, as the rain was forecast to only get heavier for the first half hour (f1.com info) the decision to force ferrari too pit in for full wets was probably the least embarrassing thing for them.

Agreed on both points. Ferrari needed to win this race. 2nd place would not be good enough, so decided to take a gamble for sure. If they started the race on full wets, then it wouldve been hard for them to beat both McLarens. What they shouldve done is put Massa on intermediates and Raikonnen on wets, so they cover both angles. If Massa's strategy is better and he was running in 1st place, he couldve backed the McLarens up to Raikonnen, to allow Raikonnen to overtake. If Raikonnen managed to get right behind Massa then Massa could allow Raikonnen through into 1st and could then back into McLaren, allowing Raikonnen to pull away.

Ferrari's strategy of going with intermediates was extremely high risk and was probably made in a hurry.

Oh, and very nice pics from wonder_lander. That post must've taken you quite sometime to put together. Nice.
