GTHD - MASSIVELY overrated

the flat background render was awful, thats all i remember about it when i had it, didn't like it one bit either, was rather slow but i'm more of a need for speed / burnout arcade type of guy than these boring wannabe sim car games, even Forza fell short in what it actually could have been

Forza was dull as dishwater. I quite liked GTHD, the fact it had one track made it quite good for getting your laptimes down.

It was never anything other than a tech demo really, PS3 only owners filled their pants with it at the time because there was nothing else that great to play.

gt:hd IS gt4, it was just optimized to run at a higher res, hence it was released for free a year ago.

coming from gt4 on the ps2 it should just look like a slightly better gt4.

comparing to full releases like pgr4 and forza2 is just stupidity.

Totally agree. Never understand why some folk practically orgasmed over it.
The same can be said about Halo 3, actually I do say the same about Halo 3 :) As far as GTHD goes, no it isn't orgasmic but like said, it's oldish now and I suppose (like Halo) you'd have to be a GT junkie to fully appreciate it.

Yeah never understood the fuss over it either, or the need to compare it to full games either BTW, just a glorified demo.

The difference is that no one says halo 3 is a graphical feast.

Wow - thanks for the generally balanced responses! I was, tbh, expecting to be ripped a new one...

Just to clarify a couple of points:

I know it's free
I know it's old
I know it's basically a 1 track demo
I know Prologue is likely to be 100% better

My whole point was that when it came out a lot of people were *specifically* saying that it kicked PGR3 *graphically*. That's why I wanted to check it, as a showcase of PS3 car graphics (and to be fair, the car models are really nice - it's the background, track and overused bloom that's sub-par). It's nothing to do with which is a better 'game', as that's obviously an unfair comparison.

I think it was likely the SDF at the time feeling that HAD to rave about it?

On a more positive note, I got Heavenly Sword in the bundle and from the reviews was expecting to be underwhelmed, but so far I'm enjoying it. The aftertouch is tricky though!

I think the potential is there, as said its old now, i'd love to see what they are going to do to improve on it, I expect the final release will look a LOT better.

I honestly wouldn't mind if it looked the same as the cars are brilliant, though the cardboard cutouts and poor lighting could do with an update, but the one thing I want is a sense of any sort of speed.

I fell asleep the other day and my mate came around and started playing Halo 3, he got to the 3rd stage (where there is a big opening and covenant using ghosts etc..) and I woke up and asked him what it was because I thought it looked absolutely stunning. I guess some sections must look a lot better than others because I loved the bit at the start in the water too, but I've not really played anything other than MP which does look a little naff.

Your right there, the car models are awesome, but the cardboard cutouts are laughable.

PGR3 is still to this day a very very good looking game, I think the car models in GT:HD are better than those in PGR3 but the tracks are deffinately not, but I shouldn't be comparing a full game to a tech demo, lets just see what the final GT is like :)

To be fair there hasn't been any videos released where the city tracks are shown and those look better than the current HD videos showing just the nascar track.

PGR4 still looks amazing and GT isn't doing anything with the weather but from what I've seen of GT it has the upper edge on graphics.

That's incorrect, many people think that Halo 3 looks stunning. Just goes to show that different people like and rate different things, differently :)

I'll have to agree with that, WoW looks fantastic to me but to most people it looks like crap.

HL2 is still one of the best looking games ever imo too.

Hello mate.

You played Episode 2 yet?
I started yesterday, and was suitably wowed, that does look great :)
Certainly added more graphical lovelyness to what came before :)

V1N.

I haven't finished it (Portal's got me hooked) but I am loving what I have played so far, got so many games on the go at the moment, I will no doubt finish it over the weekend.

As far as I was aware GT:HD was put out as nothing other than a quick wee bonus game that they could make quickly & easily, really don't think they were meaning it to be any sort of showcase for the graphics since it's just GT4 in a higher resolution. Comparing one track and a few cars to PGR is a bit of a reach.

Well said.

In essence it's just a previous generation (PS2) game running at HD resolutions and 60fps, the fact that you felt the need to compare it to PGR3 just shows how impressive it really is for such a dated engine.

On my 1080P TV GT:HD looks far better as it's not rendered at a low resolution and upscaled to hell.
