Royal Mail Strike Action

What's really struck me about this strike (no pun intended) is that unlike most strikes this one really doesn't have the support of most of the general public, I really don't know of anyone who's actually in support of the RM staff for stiking! At least before I could find someone who would agree with it or at least sympathise a little!

I'd say exactly the opposite, compared to most strikes a lot more people around me have been saying how sympathetic they are to workers who have been royally shafted by management. I work in IT.

It's not surprising that people are generally against it though. Most people are greedy, selfish and short-sighted these days, and so will say things like "if my boss changed the terms of my employment I'd have to accept it or quit, I don't see why they should be any different". :(

OH MY GOD, The Merseyside lot are unofficially striking as they were asked to to start work at 6am, instead of 5:30am.... SERIOUSLY. WTF!

Why do you expect them to be missing  you should receive the backlog all within 3/5 days..
They were all sent from the same place, but not at the same time.

If they are delivered in no particular order then it's going to be hell trying to find if any are missing.. not slagging anyone off, just I hope everything is in order soon :)

I work in IT and for local government, I've had a 10% pay cut this year and won't have another pay rise for another 4 years - I've no sympathy for them. My solution? I'm moving job, hopefully to the private sector! I don't see the problem with RM staff, if they don't like it - move job!

Those striking rarely have the backing of the public these days although I could be wrong.

Kami had the right idea, don't cry about changes, make a change yourself. I was in a similar position but had double the pay cut he did so rather than cry about it I made the decision to move on like a lot of others did.

There is a reason why many strikers don't get support from people these days, and it's because their demands aren't considered reasonable by the general public. Striking mainly occurs in either the Civil service, or formerly nationalised industries where the workers don't accept they aren't nationalised any more and therefore a certain level of performance and efficency is required.

For the rest of the public, listening to people whinging about things that are either common sense or long overdue will often fall on deaf ears.

I doubt if that's quite the full story, most of them would have started before the changes at 4.00 a.m. to 5.00 a.m. so it's a change of 1-2 hours. I imagine they came in at 5.30 expecting to be allowed in, I know from my local postie his office had changed to 6.00 a.m. but they still let postman start at 4.30 a.m.

The reason why they weren't let in at 5.30 is because the managers are most likely ******. The managers kept them outside to be spiteful, I would kick the managers up the ass for causing a strike that should not have happened.
The posties shouldn't have gone on strike, if they disagreed they could have worked their hours then taken work back to the office. To deliver no post isn't the way to go. This was one office where managers went of their way to cause problems, seen it before in other companies.

Sounds to me like the workers had been ignoring their official start and finish times for a while and been allowed to get away with it, and are now moaning because they've used up all their goodwill and were told to work as they should...

Come again?

Workers used up their goodwill?

It's the goodwill of the workers that get jobs done. You know, coming in early, not taking their meal break, taking their own cars out, not claiming overtime when finishing 20 mins or over their time.

OK, so you're anti this strike but you seem to have very little idea about the working practices of todays postman so your argument has little or no foundation.

While I wouldn't normally agree with Flanders' posts on this subject, with this one I do.

Staff 'goodwill' does appear to be very important in keeping the delivery system working, even in a small office like mine. If Royal Mail start forcing a much harder line with its staff, then a lot of that goodwill will be lost, even with generally amiable fools like me. This won't help anyone, be it Royal Mail, its staff, the customer or the general public.

And I also note that a lot of the emphasis in these posts is on staff clocking off early, but many of you fail to realise that an awful lot of us posties start early too (by as much as half an hour in some cases) and are unpaid for that.

Is flexi time in your contract?

Flexi-time isn't in my contract either, however I am able to to arrive and leave early or vice versa. Why? Because I agreed it with my manager, just like the post men have done. As long as I get my work done what's the problem? everybody's happy. If my manager tried to change my current situation for a good reason then I'd accept it, if he was just changing it to be an assclown then I wouldn't accept it.

I know one postie who starts at 3 a.m. when his official start time is 5.00 a.m. A HUGE number of postman start before their official start time, its the NORM. Anyone starting on their time was looked down on by managers.
