Convince me to get a PS3

But Gran Turismo 3 was also the first big release on the PS2.

Sure but that wasnt what you wanted to know, ( i dont think so anyway), I think GT5 Prologue and MGS4 are the GT3 and MGS 2 of the PS3. Both games were highly anticapated at there time even to the fact that many got ZOE just for the MGS2 demo ( i didnt mind ZOE was great). Both are the first of the mega Sony Franchises to appear on the PS3 (R+C not in the same league sales wise).

Im gonna leave it at that as it getting way off topic now.

Personally, I hate shooters, so if these were the games people based an arguement on to buy a 360 over a PS3 then I wouldn't be swayed. So its difficult to advise someone on what system is best for them unless they tell us what genre they like playing.

That said, the above 3 games are superb titles, but look at how long into the life of the 360 it has taken for this games to be released, the 360 is 2 years old now, and these titles arent even that old (with the exception of GoW). Its unfair to say that the PS3 cannot compare at all with the 360 for games, when they havent been able to develop titles for the same length of time.

I bet my hat that 2 years into the development of the PS3 the top 3 games on the platform will out do anything the 360 has to offer.

Before the flamewars and shouts of Fan Boy start let me remind you, I own both consoles, and this is the first time I have purchased a Playstation of any kind. I will always be a hugh 360 fan, but feel that in the gaming genre's I prefer it doesn't really excel.

I own both aswell but "guaranteeing" that the top 3 on ps3 will be better is a little foolish at this stage.

For arguments sake:

End of next year top 3 likely to be

MGS4
FF13 (japan only release at this point)
KZ 2 (i dont think so but everyone else will)

vs

Mass Effect
Halo 3
Fable 2

of course these are interchangeable depending on taste.

One year into the 360 you had

GRAW
Dead Rising
Gears of War
PGR3
DOA4
Call of Duty 2
Kameo
Condemned

That shows the variety and calibre of titles available from Nov. 05 to Nov. 06.

Again swap around from taste.

To be honest come the end of this generation I suspect the top ten stand out titles will be 5 ps3, 5 Xbox 360, none WII

He's suggesting it's all shooters and racers for the 360.

Certainly not. I am just saying that to make a point. Its much more complex than that. For example another person i know loves RPG and platformers. The 360 clearly wouldnt suit her. There is a huge issue with 360's appeal as its struggling attracting people outside of its key audience. There is a reason people joke about the 360 stereotype of having bald marines in every game. It suits the audience and its the games they talk about most.

Certain franchises like Singstar, Gran Turismo are huge multi million sellers. Singstar franhcise has 9 million sales in Europe alone. Thats higher than any Halo game. GT3 alone sold 14 million units worldwide making it the single best selling game last 10 years. Having broad appeal is key judging by PS2.

This variety card doesn't hold with the PS3.

Variety is key to attracting gamers and Sony are in a much better position in this regard with proven franchises across genres and the ability to create new ones. You cant just cater especially to afew gamers tastes and ignore the rest. There is a huge market out there of people who dont play certain games. Looks at Wii, its success was founded on the notion that it had to be different. There is a large population of females and older people in the world compared to young males. Not counting the variety in young males alone.

2008 - Year of the PS3.

Feel free to quote me on that, it's not even left the blocks yet and people are writing it off.

Exactly. These so called "analysts" writing off the PS3 saying Sony should just cancel it are so stupid. How they get the job I never know.

What is sure to happen is that when PS3 becomes mainstream price it will steam roll everything out there. 2008 is definitely Sonys year.

Time to get flamed.

At the end of the day, it comes down to the games. Sure the extra features are nice, but with premium's are shipping with the extra bells and whistles now aswell for cheaper.

At the moment, I would not get a PS3 as Im not a big fan of any of the current titles, but dont get me wrong, as soon as a few I like pop up I'll be out to get one :)

I more or less agree with you.
Although I think F1 and RFOM are two very good games that are swaying me towards the purchase of a PS3.
However, I still feel Sony haven't quite got it right with the pricing.
Xbox Elite + game and an additional controller = £299, Sony 40GB PS3 + no extras and it's £299.
The 60GB version is currently a better deal and I can't see how anyone would bother to buy the 40GB at present.
Personally I've always said the £299 price break is what I would be prepared to pay for a PS3.

But likewise, it's not even started and you're saying it's the year of the PS3 :p.
We'll just have to wait and see. Obviously MGS4 and GT5 are 2 massive games, but there isn't anything else in that catagory for the PS3 yet.

Whats headlining 2008 for the 360?

With the quality thats flying out at the moment I havent really looked past November. :D

Alan Wake is the first that comes to mind. But I haven't looked past that as it's my most anticipated game ever. :).
Oh, and Ninja Gaiden 2.

Agreed.

When It first hit the shelves I could not help but think that you were being made to pay for the extra's (Blu Ray, WiFi, Memory Card Readers) even if you did not wish to buy them. Unlike the Xbox where you had the choice of adding an HD DVD at a later date, and now with free HDMI (You also get the cable :p). I think this new price tag is much nicer on the eyes, and when some games do come out that I enjoy I will be out to get one, even though the price is slightly higher than the 360, I dont think Im really paying for those features I would not use (What it should have been like in the first place).

I've also played F1 and it was outstanding, I also played Fight Night Round 3 and Tony Hawks, all of which were great, apart from the lighting on Tony Hawks, couldnt see what I was doing half the time. So I'm in a similar boat to you, there are a few good games, but is it really worth splashing out all that cash when there are just as good alternatives on the 360? Thats what you need to ask your self. Hey, if i had the money spare I'd go and buy a PS3, but is that really the case?

Personally, Id wait for a few more titles, and see if they make any changes to online play before I purchase one, as I dont really have the cash to buy one. Although if I did have the cash id be struggling to decide. But then Id say to myself, if its this much trouble deciding then its probs best I dont until im certain.

End of story. :p (I got bacon cooking)

EDIT: I just realised you dont even have a 360!! Do'h!. If thats the case, and you sold it or gave it away by all means buy a PS3 :) I originally thought you had a 360 but was wondering if you should get a PS3 aswell
