what is it with watches?

some people have no passion or feeling for fast cars, any car will do the same job. its the same for watches, any watch will do so why spend £2000 on an expensive one.

Different cars have different features and are suited to different types of driving. Not every journey is the same. This is why the difference between a Mercedes and a Micra is not the difference between an Omega and a Casio.

I'm deadly serious. A watch is everything in the high flying world of the professional person.

Many high end car dealerships will judge a potential customer as he walks through the door not by his clothes - becuase many affluent people do not dress to impress - but by his shoes and his watch.

you've contradicted yourself in that post there - whilst I agree that from a [very] abstract point of view, a car will get you from a to b, you said yourself, it's about style and whatnot. if you don't want to spend £2k on a watch, don't bother. no-one's trying to force you.

So being a mere female who can only think about shoes:D Could someone explain the fascination with watches? surely they only need to tell the time? we have 3 threads running at the moment, all on watches which cost so much more than shoes....?

I agree but thats coming from someone who buys a £7 Casio.
We need a dedicated watch forum.

God, so now I'm unusual as a woman who likes nice watches?

Still waiting for my 1960 Omega Ladymatic to come back from the restorers.... I've paid them nearly £450 and they're taking months over it, grrr. Had better be in fantastic condition by its return...

Finding it very hard not to splash out on something in the interim!

Incidentally - mechanical watches do lose a few seconds through the day - but there is a beauty (in a steampunky sort of way) in having a completely mechanical mechanism... Even more so when they're self-winding :)

I don't wear a watch, and I dress poorly when at work, and in lycra at almost all other times.

I'm happy* :).

*Well actually I'm not, but it's nothing to do with not having a watch and exercising all my spare time :p.

i need a good heavy watch on my wrist. sadly i cant afford the watch i want yet but it'll come.

my old man has a lush omega seamaster and the quality is amazing. ive tried to steal it from him on numerous occasions :p

I bought mine as a treat for myself. Much like you would buy computer bits/a car/shoes/designer clothes/handbags. (I don't buy handbags but ladies might :p)

Is it essential ? Nope. But does everyone look at it and go wow ? Yep. It was nice to get it and its nice to wear a classy time piece knowing I've worked hard to get the money to buy it.

But why do you need people to look at your wrist and say 'wow'? That, for the large part, is what I don't understand.

Probably still why I happily drive a 205 :).

Compensate for people looking at other things and not saying "wow"? ;)

:p

A watch denotes your status in life and your level of professionalism.
Can you imagine the embarrassment of being in a board meeting only to be seen taking the time from a watch costing a mere £500?

Actually that makes a lot of sense especially when it comes to interviews.
I can imagine a future boss looking at my £7 Casio and thinking cheapskate.
I would wager that if I had an expensive watch it would be broken within 6 months because of my hobby's.
The £7 watch I'm wearing now looks like its been in a war.

I prefer shoes, coats, suits, nice clothes, just spent £200 on a tailor made trench coat.
Got a lot of doc martins and biker boots laying about.
I have severe addiction to the house of fraiser to buy my clothes.

My watch however cost about £40, it's not used to tell the time much, just to look good, use my phone for telling the time. I wouldn't understand why someone would spend over £80 on a watch, unless it had a built in laser, i like lasers.
