Would you swap a 330 for a Mondeo ST220

No I'm not, but I don't see how things like an annoying rattle from the dashboard and a bit of sub-par plastic can be endearing? It doesn't add to the 'rawness' of the car it just feels out of place in a car of its type.

Hmmm, "rawness" isn't really what I'm talking about. I'd say my use of the GT analogy tainted my point slightly.

What I was aiming at is that people use a lot of sensory perception to decide what is happening. rattles and hums, oversteer, understeer, bumps, tramlining, wind noise and so on can all give the impression of something happening. It may not be to every body's taste, but it certainly gives the impresson that something is going on.

If you get out of such a car and then get into a supersmooth, quiet piece of machinery, you would lose that sensory input and may find the driving experience somewhat clinical and boring in comparrison. Some people like that and are happy to get rid of the annoying noise. Others miss the foibles. Maybe not "Oh, I miss that rattle, let me pull a wire loose" but in a more "something is missing" way.

Think of it like this. If a car rattles at 70mph, you always know your doing 70. When you reach 70, the rattle starts and you think, "eh up, I've hit 70!"

If nothing happens at 70, you don't know you're doing it. Sure, you can see it on the speedo, but it doesn't make you feel like you're doing anything exciting

The Mondeo is that good, I changed from an e38 7 Series to a Mondeo TD.

Hardly! :p

BMW's are imo something special, in both build quality & driver appeal, something any Ford simply isn't (even an RS!)

Needs must atm for me, but, when my situation changes, I'll be back at BMW's door. :)

you would rather have an N plate 316 than a mondeo ST220?

You'd rather have a top of the range D plate Granada than a spanking new 318? It's not really a fair comparison, and one with a pretty obvious answer :p

it was a rather silly statement that i quoted, my comment was just as stupid for a reason :P

Wash your mouh out!

How you can even suggest a 316 compact has more driver appeal than an escos or rs500 or rs200 is scandalous!

Build quality I'll give you! :p

I never mentioned a Compact! :p

I'd rather an M series BMW than an RS is perhaps what I should have said.... :o - I'm a long standing RS fan btw (I've had both an S1 & S2 RST in the past), but, my tastes have moved on a bit I suppose.

Good point, I certainly wouldn't (although I'd rather have a RWD car)

^a tyre fitter with an m3?
LOL you want to see the tyre fitter we have here on the industrial estate he drives a GT3 Porker during the summer months

back to the op speaking from personal experience and having had both an E36 M3 and a 200Bhp Mondeo V6 id personally stick with the BM
unless there is a valid reason for wanting to get rid of it? residuals on fords drop very quick unless its a ltd edition which the ST220 isn't :(
if anyone says that an ST220 drives better than an M3 then they aint driving the M3 right in the first place ;)

Is 'E36 328 sport or an ST200' a fair previous generation comparison, if so which one/would you swap?

I don't think I swap an ST220 for a 330 if I had one already, but both would be serious contenders if I was looking to buy something like that.

I'd probably rather have an RS as you can get more power out of the them without spending a lot. Probably a lot less than you'd have to spend on the BM to get similar power gains. :)

Not quite so sure about that mate, an M3 for example,(e30 excluded) is way over a stock Sierra Cossie to start with.

the BMW equivalent would be 530i sport really.

No it wouldn't - even ignoring the fact the 530i Sport was introduced after production of the Mk2 Mondeo stopped, it's a considerably larger car than the Mk2 Mondeo.

I'm not sure there is an 'equivilent' in the BMW range but the closest in terms of size and performance would be an E46 328i.

I did exactly that, dumped a 330ci for and an ST220 about 3 years ago and never regretted it, what I did regret was selling the ST220.

I won't say yes to the question however because I had totally different reasons for chopping the 330 in, what I will say though is that I a lot of people will say no simply because the ST has'nt got a BMW badge on it. Don't discount the ST, its a fantastic car and one which I actually preffered to the 330

I was addressing this point:

ST200 is a Mk2, he's asked that question becuase he owns a Mk2 ST200.

with all the ST220's being mentione (including in his own post) I seem to have missed the ST200 being mentioned!
