Type-R gets a new engine

I hardly see why its a surprise?

Every other manufacturer has used its "sports" branding to sell more cars and ultimately dilute the meaning of having a "sports" version of that particular model.

BMW M Sport
Audi S Line
Ford ST

Such is the way of things.

Oh no the precious Type-R badge has been ruined.. again  When will these atrocities ever end ;) Anyway its going to be called the Type-R D and can be identified by its cloud of soot :p

In all honesty I'm just intered in how they are going to make this diesel "high reving" and what exactly they mean by high. Also aren't the power figures a bit messed up for it to be a high reving engine? Shouldn't the torque and bhp figures be a bit closer if the thing doesn't top out at 4k RPM? Bah, what do I know :o

I personally get bored of the whole VTEC thing very quickly, I can see the appeal, but it's like my GSXR600 and GSXR1000 experiences, the 600 could easily keep up with 1000 in any real world 'race', but the effort you put into the 600 at first was rewarding but soon became tiresome.. As soon as I changed to the 1000, I still got as much pleasure, but instead of putting all my attention into being in 'race' mode on *** gearbox, I was sliding it, and found I was more relaxed when keeping up with the lads, meaning I enjoyed the ride more..

Personally a petrol turbo version of the Type-R would be a better move..

Saying that, having driven the Astra 888 Thurlby CDTi special, I can say that it is actually a pretty decent hot-hatch, if they could replicate that in the TypeD it wouldn't be too bad..

I can see why they will try to sell a sporty diesel, lets face it, car manufacturers dont make money from us enthusiasts, they make money from aiming a car at the middle of the road brigade and the fleet sector.

I recall reading somewhere that honda didnt actually make any money on the DC2 as it was more of an engineering exercise, i could be far off the mark here tho :p

The second revision will be fine, and named more appropriately.
If the Civic Type-R is known as the CTR, and the diesel could be T-RD, then the new release could be the Civic RE-TRD.

I bet you it will, the EP3 isnt that good.

After owning one, now a DC5 and having driven a FN2 on numerous occasions, that's not entirely true. The only reason why the FN2 is almost as quick as the EP3 on track is because it needs the traction control to keep the back end in shape thanks to the ancient suspension setup to give more boot space. Not very Type R is it?

I'd have a EP3 over the FN2 any day of the week.

Your an enthusiast, the vast majority of car buyers are not, Honda are in the business of selling cars, hence why the new type R is a softer variant of the previous model, and i guarantee you they will sell more of the FN2 as opposed to the EP3.

EP3 is a great track car, but that in itself isnt as good as the EK9....

But I wasn't when I bought the EP3. I didn't have a clue. All I knew that at the time, out of all the hot hatches that I'd test driven (MCS, LCR, MG 160, Focus ST170 etc) the EP3 was the only one that made me feel like a 12 year old kid so I bought one. The new one is very comfortable, but if I wanted something fast and comfortable I'd put my money elsewhere then the FN2.

Honda did the right thing with the EP3. They turned an extremely dull market, and lets face it, one that wasn't going anywhere but down, into something worth looking into. It's because of the EP3 that the new GTi is so good, it's because of it that Vauxhall, Ford and the rest are now actually releasing good hot hatches reminiscent of the old times. If the EP3 didn't exist I bet the market would be rather dull. Honda made all the other manufacturers go back to the drawing board with their tails in between their legs and forced them to come up with better models.

Looking back at the way the EP3 took the market, the FN2 could have been so much more and redefining but it just isn't. I'd rather have the FST over it. I'm babbling on now anyway so I'll leave it at that. You don't have to agree with me, I'm just putting across my personal views.
