I gave her £470, and £570 appeared in my account, woo!

I dont believe anyone on here would give it back - why is everyone saying they would?? - they are talking utter utter rubbish!

I love the way people think banks are so stict with money! Their computers dont even check signatures of cheques unless they are in excess of £1000.

I never knew that, i thought they always checked them

I read the other week (can't remember where) that they don't check the dates on the cheques, so post-dated cheques can be cashed any time. Is that true?

What's so hard to believe that there might be SOME honest people out there, you should try it sometime;)

Bring it back in and just tell them they made a mistake and give the poor girl a break.

If its a smaller bank it may have been only one person on that till all day so she may get into trouble.

Its only 100 pounds after all.

I put a couple of cheques in my account totaling 280 and the woman put 2800 but then noticed :(

Could do with 2.5 grand extra lol :D but I'm too honest and would have said if I noticed.

Why not do the honest thing and phone them up, telling them you think they've made a mistake?
I think this is a bit of a disgrace. You have no right to the £100, let alone £600.
I think you should return it and be honest.

Oh dear god. The do-goodery on these forums is enough to make me vomit sometimes

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-upmanship

Give it a rest will you chaps? :p

True honesty and good deeds are those which have not been announced for the world to see (unless the announcing was for the genuine purpose of encouraging others to do the same).

I don't see how they'll trace this one. it's on the receipt and the money I expect would oif gone straight in the till. You might get lucky, I can't think of a way they can trace the missing £100 back to you.

There is always the possibility that the cashier reads OCUK forums and looks up the guys email address in his trust and then his ISP is contacted to give over his address etc. Given that his name is "likely" to be the name in his email addy right there ;)

Extremely unlikely however!

I would keep it! TSB especially (sp?) have ripped me off charging me for insurance I ended in March! they charged me up2 september. Even though I shown them a letter they just claim that I had the insurance benefits for the time I was paying.

LOL - perhaps I am an honest peson but I dont shout out to a whole forum saying, I am honest! I consider myself an honest person however from a bank error I would have no qualms in taking £100 from their error (this isnt me justifying it, by the way). I'd say I am far far more honest than you in admiting that I would not report to the bank. I am almost willing to bet £100 that you wouldnt report it to the bank - I believe your pants are on fire, I am calling bull****;)

Well when it comes to honesty we should be striving to one-up each other:)

Oh no! Where did you read that from!? Perrrleaase.

Na they prolly wont find out until tomorrow when the money is counted. I use to work in a bank in Canada for a while and things like this happend on the odd occasion. Some just got written off where some were resolved.

Where I worked a person would count the money and check it on the receipts and if an amount was missing they would make a call to the teller or manager or whoever and they would look into it. Whatever the outcome I have never known someone to get fired, not over a small amount as £100 anyway.

You would be suprised how often this happens with banks.

Its going to be very hard for them to discover which account has been credited the extra £100 unless you had a particularly memorable encounter and the cashier can remember you bringing £470 not £570.

Ive only ever given away £10 and i was absolutely devastated. 2 years working and £10 towards the end of my time there, its like you have failed. You wonder if the person would bring it back. This person didn't, but i didn't blame them for my mistake and £10. £100 is a bit different though, i imagine the cashier is severely disappointed.

I know that at Natwest branches, their cash tills are absolutely rammed full of notes etc, and when depositing cash it, it all goes into the same pool of notes in the till. Therefore once the deposit is made and the cash is added to the pool, the information is lost forever, so only the official records & receipts count towards any traceability. Therefore if your bank is Natwest (or any other bank that doesnt keep individual cash deposits separate), I wouldn't worry about them chasing you for the £100.

I imagine some people on these forums would even go as far as to claim that they'd hand in a winning lottery ticket if they found one on the street... "Because it's the right thing to do!"

I can't see any downsides to this tbh, you're getting some of the money back that the bank has screwed you over down the years, and the lady who can't count will get fired allowing for the bank to recruit some more competent staff which benefits everyone*

*Last bit was only partly serious :p

COunter errors will show in the morning. The amount posted to your account will show £570 whereas the processed voucher will show £470 and this will be raised by iPSL as mis-match that will be duly reversed in the morning.
