Quick Review on the HD3870!

gareth I wasn't for 1 second claiming that my 7800 is that nifty, just trying to get some people to look beyond the obvious numbers and employ a little common sense when making such bold suggestions / comments

it looks faster by 4-6fps only because its clocked at 775mhz which a 2900 can do easy

That's a bit like comparing the 8800GTX with the 8800Ultra on the OCing front, just with the Ultra comming in at £70+ LESS than the GTX.

No doubt the 3870 overclocks as well as, if not better than the 2900XT, as it has less to worry about on the thermal side...... compared to the GT, which is about maxed out on the cooler Nvidia supply.

TBH personaly i am more likely to go 3850 crossfire and clock the pants off them than 3870, but i'll wait for the reviews before jumping on the hardware!

but it's true the 3870 is basicly the same as a 2900xt in performance wise. gibbo said also...

If the 3000 series has fixed AA, then if i was a 2900 owner id be ******* livid, as to me it would look like you bought broken cards, and AMD knew they were broken, as if you remember at the start, they were saying the 2900 was a GTX performer, but for a GTS price, but it didn't turn out that way, it kept getting delayed (so obviosuly they were having problems and were trying to fix them), so if the 3000 series work, it would look like they've probably said '**** it' back then, 'we can't go through to November without releasing anything, as were already getting caned, so we better stick thsese boken cards out while we fix em, then when we fix em, sling em out out under a differnet name to replace these'.

Were just gona have to wait and see first if the AA is the same, but if not, id be thinking the above for sure.

I think AMD/ATI are on the skids and this new refresh is an attempt to get some badly needed cash in to the coffers ASAP for as little deveolpment time as possible, the new name change for these cards is a clear giveaway.

that's a pretty uninformed comment to be honest, they're not a fly by night company who will file for chapter 11 anytime soon.

it's not a scam, they're refreshed cards under a new 55nm process with a lower price.

the GT's will be faster for sure but if the pricing is competitive these 38xx cards are an alternative especially for cheap crossfire setups & if they clock as good as we think they will.

Hi there

We are building a system tonight with 3x 3870's in and 1x 3850 into an Intel X38 board to see if it works OK on an Intel platform and to see how crazy it is. :D

Also these are now up for order on the OcUK website!

Any pre-orders will ship Wednesday for delivery Thursday so you can play with your cards the NDA is actually lifted.

We can't put the clock speeds and stream processor in for NDA reasons but the rumours around the web are pretty accurate. ;)

Gibbo, that's bang on for pricing only hope ATI/AMD can ship in numbers and do not repeat the comedy of errors that was the 8800GT launch.

me wants one *have to find out if I'm keeping my job first, how great 7 wks before chrimbo being told you might not be in work after this thurs :( *

just noticed the 3850's are true single slot coolers as long as temps are down that's a major bonus.could snuggly fit in my shuttle! top work OCUK

Sorry to hear that man. I hope you keep your job.

I thought selling my Pro was going to be hard. It is now with these prices  :(.

Umm, they are the same price as an 8800GT, surely that cant be good since the GT is faster by like 2fps according to those fishy reviews.

MSI X38 Diamond? Nice......

Hi there

Yes were using the X38 Diamond as MSI confirmed it works with CrossfireX.

I've got a Phenom and Quad 790FX board here to try as well, but will go Intel first and see how these cards perform with CPU around 4GHz. :)

Could become a popular board, its the only X38 with 4xPCI-E slots!

Of course that depends upon whether someone wants to pay ~£200 for a baord, then ~£150 on CPU, £300 on RAM, and then ~£650 on gfx cards.

You know, with HR-03's bending over the PCB on the "middle" two cards, you COULD run 3870x4.......

You would have NO space for anything else though!

if it turns out only slightly slower in the majority of games, couldn't care less about 3dmark, i might be up for some crossfire 3870 versus 8800gt sli.

prefer to run intel boards instead of nfarce - dropping a few frames isn't a problem for the stability of p35/x38.

the pricing is going to be interesting.

I was thinking this too!
