It's All About Image

Not been here long but must admit I have already noticed this.
Seems to be a lot of racism, sexism and homophobia on these forums :(
And there’s me thinking this was a modern forum, I guess some people just cannot drag themselves out of the dark ages :p

No there isn't. You are merely misinterpreting things. :)

What city? Come to leeds. Theres a massive fashion variety. Im presuming by 'dance heads' you mean poptastic dancy trancy hits with annoying high pitch female vocals. If you go to proper dance nights you will see a variets of tshirts, jeans, 'cyber', huge v-necks, braces, crazy hats...
(for leeds anyway) I know if people wore some of the stuff they do in Leeds in Doncaster on a friday/saturday night out they would probably end up being glassed

Well, I thought Liverpool was supposed to be one of the 'best' cities in the UK, but I don't believe in that title. Full of screaming scouse whores, big 'real' dangerous men with two brain cells. And, of course, all following the latest excellent fashion trends.

I've heard Leeds is cool though. I've always secretly loved that place, and I have absolutely no idea why. :p

Everyone is in a "clique" or "category".. everyone. Even those who claim to be individual, are infact just like others who claim to be individual. I've had threads on these very forums where people have claimed to be unlike anyone else, yet when you put them side by side with someone else who claims the same, they are wearing very similar clothing, listen to the same type of music, have similar views on life etc. etc.

We are a social species; we have hive mentality and congregate in "herds." It's what humans do.

I don't hate trend. It's great that similar people get together and share the things they enjoy, as do I, it's the problem of people being told what to do and doing it. Perhaps because, as a person, they aren't quite mentally strong enough to just do as they wish, and face the criticism from people they know, like family and friends.

And as I said, I'm not innocent. I used to don the latest tracksuits and trainers some 8 years ago. Always felt wrong in myself back then, as I imagine many people do these days; following trends to impress or be in agreement with their surroundings.

If you think you're unique, and what you're doing is unique- you're wrong. In fact by drinking wine you're really fitting yourself into another group, because you don't want to be seen as part of that group.

So how's worse, beer drinkers who like it, or wine drinkers because don't want to be classed as beer drinkers because it's "uncouth?"

That's also part of growing up. If we did not learn what others approved/disapproved of we would not learn much at all.

The point I was getting at in my previous reply was that we are always concerned about what others think of us. There are plenty of people who are "Take it or leave it" but often enough, in a twist of irony, they are the very same people who are worried that they are upsetting others, or are not looked upon fondly by others. They are more "I am what I am, but only because I know it to be 'right.'"

It's also ironic that a fair number of people who want to be unique or different only do so because they want others to think they are unique or different, not because they actually want to be.

It's a topic with a lot of interest and many books/publications about it, should you want to actually read up on it. :)

EDIT: badbob raised the same point I see. :)

i agree. regardless of how different you want to be and how different you think you are there's always someone as different as you. and i also agree with the op - it is all about image.

following trends to impress or be in agreement with their surroundings.

There's the crux of the matter. Following trends can fall down into various categories.

Is someone a fashion victim if they're wearing the same clothes as everyone else or are they comfortable in what they're wearing and actually like it?

Is someone following the herd solely to fit in with the crowd when simply aiming to avoid ridicule?

I think certain questions on here that you and I may find simple to answer, specifically sociological enquiries, are usually youths attempting avoidance of painting a big target on themselves. Nothing more.

To address a slightly different point there are a lot of groups that I fit into. Dance music fan, rock music fan, car enthusiast, part time guitarist, carpet club dance competitor, kareoke king, lager drinker, argumentative sod, good friend, football fan... I wouldn't say it is possible to pigeon hole me in any way.

How do you define a particularly poor thread? There's some decent answers in here.

There's nowt poor about this thread.. he's achieved more than most infact by sparking off a real discussion, rather than a whole page of "lol's" or rolleyes.

"epic fail" is fast becoming a failure itself. It's soooo last year.

His OP was poor and ill thought out, something which I'm sure you spotted as it was aimed at people yourself, who have a clear view on whats manly and whats not.

Fox defines a poor thread as one where he can't belittle someone for their lack of automotive knowledge and hence resorts to a snide remark that adds nothing to the thread.

Yea, whatever

It's waffle aimed at the people who think carrying manbags and wearing certain types of trainer is homo. He's saying these people are image obsessed simply becuase they've got opinions on what is and isn't acceptable on what you can and cannot wear and do, etc etc.

This is not about image, this is about standards.

Some good has come from this thread and some of the replies are interesting, but thats despite the original post not because of it.

I know only one person who is like this. I think the whole "be a man" thing is dying really. At least in youth culture. i can see 30 - 40 year old builders and the like trying to live this way.

Be and do what you want. In the real world no one shold care, the fact they o is stupidity on their part. Eg from me, Im wering white tracksuit bottoms and trainers but listening to carcass's album heartwork. You can like/drink what you want and know yourself how you feel.
