Quick Review on the HD3870!

Hi there

We are building a system tonight with 3x 3870's in and 1x 3850 into an Intel X38 board to see if it works OK on an Intel platform and to see how crazy it is. :D

Also these are now up for order on the OcUK website!

Any pre-orders will ship Wednesday for delivery Thursday so you can play with your cards the NDA is actually lifted.

We can't put the clock speeds and stream processor in for NDA reasons but the rumours around the web are pretty accurate. ;)

I don't see them... did you have to take them down like you did with the Phenom's?

I dunno, they were put up and taken down pretty quickly and I missed it.

[Edit] Sorry I meant to put Penryn and not Phenom. :o

Hi there

Penryn has been up on the website for a few days now.

Where I can I launch early, sometimes I get my fingers slapped but it gives some of you an idea who get to see it. :)

Hi there

Penryn has been up on the website for a few days now.

£70 premium over the Kentsfield.... not bad, especialy with 2x the cache!

Hopefully the price differential scales like that all the way down, 10% premium is a 2.4Ghz Yorkfield for ~£175

Whats the news on Phenom?

Hi there

I gave up in my testing tonight, either the MSI X38 Diamond is not a great board or the BIOS it ships with is poor.

It won't do much past 400MHz FSB and struggles to get an SLACR beyond 3GHz.

Not had chance to try a different BIOS yet, but did get a benchmark from two 3870 in Crossfire and they hit just under 16,000.

Thats lower than two 3850 scored overclocked in an Abit P35 with CPU at 3.40GHz but admittedly that was a DDR2 board and had Windows XP.

I am going to put the 3870's in the same system that I tested the 3850's in tomorrow for a fair test. Though it seems to me if your gaming sub 1280x1024 resolution then the 3850's are no doubt looking the better buy especially if your willing to overclock them.

I had a little overclock and the 3870's seemed quite happy at 825MHz and 2500Mhz but I did not push further as I needed to get home. It does look like these cards will no doubt be good for 850MHz+ on the core, maybe 900MHz and well beyond 2500-2600MHz on the memory.

I was using the X38 board as my intention was to place 3x 3870 and 1x 3850 in Crossfire, just a shame it seems a poor overclocking board. Plus the fact I had 1800MHz DDR3 memory and the board has no decent dividers and gets troublesome past 400MHz FSB.

Hi there

I have a Phenom at work, 9600 I think it is but am still waiting on a decent 790FX board, so will test when I get one of those.

I was more looking at prices and whether it'll meet its release date.

Performance would be cool too..... i'm unlikely to switch unless its something special (happy with my E6400 at 3.45Ghz-3.6Ghz, and i've got an X38 board) but it's always nice to know. some of the features look pretty cool, K10 seems to be a very elegant solution, but will it perform?

MSI board and four 3870 XTs please Monsieur Gibbo. :)

Dont want to have have to buy the lot myself just to find out that Phenom is holding the lot back.

You have the MSI board yet Señor Gibbo? :)

HI there

Yes MSI K9A2's have arrived, some spare stock too but not available to customers yet until tomorrow. So I now have my Phenom 9600, the MSI 790 with 4x PCI-E slots and four HD 3870's to place in it. Now just waiting on ATI to release drivers that properly function in Crossfire.

Said it before and ill say it again, I hate you. ;)

What PSU for four cards Señor Gibbo?

Seeing some of the later reviews the card does look like a BIG improvement over the 2900XT in a few games, its not a bad choice of a card now if you're an ATi fan or have crossfire mobo.
