I think you missed the point about R&D being done externally. I think it's more to do with a particular chip being done by an external source, not the entire console R&D done externally.
Why would it be a problem for another company to do R&D on a 'top secret' project anyway? Would IBM, Toshiba, Panasonic or any other huge electrical company get away with spilling the beans or, even more so, actually tell anyone? I don't think it would be worth the breach of contract.
In any case, wouldn't Nintendo just R&D what they wanted the console to do, the pads, the medium games come on etc and then work with IBM, Panasonic and ATI, as per, to produce the components.
Don't forget, the Gamecube put out some of the nicest graphics on any of the last gen and was the cheapest. It was released in 2001 too, same year as the Xbox; and about a year after the PS2. There's no reason why Nintendo couldn't compete technologically - not that I think they'll try.![]()
The only problem I have with the wii is the fact that you cant get demos for the blinking thing.
nintendo actually think about their consoles and games to increase the fun and playablity they dont just chuck money at their consoles to offer a high spec console/media player.

...and as shown by the replies in this thread. I guess that means that those who have contributed to this thread aren't "serious gamers" according to the OP. So, OcUKers, how does that make you feel?It depends on what your personal idea if fun is and it seems there's quite a few people that disagree with you - as shown by the sales figures.
I think serious games relates to the 360 and ps3 owners. People who own a Wii generally aren't serious gamers its more of a casual thing. I don't think you can really argue with that (of course there will be the odd exceptions).
This reminds me of the latest TV adverts for the 360 where a living room is "built" outside, with a 360 and a flatscreen TV, and the onlookers pick up the controllers and start to play. I can't remember the tagline for the advert but it seemed to be tipping the hat towards the Wii's success at getting diverse people playing together, as opposed to traditional gamers playing online via XBL. It's a shame that they ruined it by having a woman picking up a controller to play Halo 3... I don't know any women that would suddenly become interested in gaming just to play Halo 3.Kinda wrong. one of the main selling points of 360 and ps3, much like other consoles was that they are more for casual users, compared to PC
LOL.. this thread shows how narrow minded some people are..
I have all 3 consoles, and as a 'gamer' (not sure what status..) I love the Wii...
Okay, change my comments to 'The Wii could be bad news for any serious hardware junkie' If it makes you happy.
Yes and I made the point that the final manucaturer (Sony, Nintendo etc) still have to do their own R & D for the WHOLE project. More likely that ATI/Nvidia/IBM only know about a small portion of the project. How each externally developed part interconnects, internal software/firmware, general design etc etc
In regards to secrets, its about using the stuff themselves - as Sony did for the PS1 - they were a contributor for Nintendo or Sega and then came out with their own competing device. Thats why its unlikely anyone outside the parent company would get an idea on the whole project.
There is a lot more to do than just that - very rarely if ever do the CPU, motherboard and GFX come from the same company - usually 3 different ones, how do they interlink, what memory is used and how much, what optical media and hows that going to work and what speed is required (relatively fine balancing act on its own) - you cant just throw the different peices together and hope!!!
I never said Nintendo couldnt compete, all I said was it was unlikely that they would try (who wouldnt like their profits from releasing current tech instead of next gen tech), it would be hard for their Board of Directors to sanction a totally different approach after being so successful this way (until they try a similar approach and possibly fail with the next release of course)
Good.Okay, change my comments to 'The Wii could be bad news for any serious hardware junkie' If it makes you happy.
The point I am / was trying to make is boardroom boffs will look at the wii's success and say we do not need to go extravigant on hardware specs for our next system and use the same strategy as Nintendo... I'm not dissing the Wii in any way. I had one, I have a DS, I had a N64 and my favorite console of all time was my SNES ! But I do look forward to the next 'latest' technology being implemented to future consoles.
