Why the Wii needs to fail!

for a while i never knew ANYONE with one.. they picked up after a while i guess though.
Which was good, because it turned out to be such a brilliant multiplayer system :)

I think you missed the point about R&D being done externally. I think it's more to do with a particular chip being done by an external source, not the entire console R&D done externally.

Why would it be a problem for another company to do R&D on a 'top secret' project anyway? Would IBM, Toshiba, Panasonic or any other huge electrical company get away with spilling the beans or, even more so, actually tell anyone? I don't think it would be worth the breach of contract.

Yes and I made the point that the final manucaturer (Sony, Nintendo etc) still have to do their own R & D for the WHOLE project. More likely that ATI/Nvidia/IBM only know about a small portion of the project. How each externally developed part interconnects, internal software/firmware, general design etc etc

In regards to secrets, its about using the stuff themselves - as Sony did for the PS1 - they were a contributor for Nintendo or Sega and then came out with their own competing device. Thats why its unlikely anyone outside the parent company would get an idea on the whole project.

In any case, wouldn't Nintendo just R&D what they wanted the console to do, the pads, the medium games come on etc and then work with IBM, Panasonic and ATI, as per, to produce the components.

Don't forget, the Gamecube put out some of the nicest graphics on any of the last gen and was the cheapest. It was released in 2001 too, same year as the Xbox; and about a year after the PS2. There's no reason why Nintendo couldn't compete technologically - not that I think they'll try. :)

There is a lot more to do than just that - very rarely if ever do the CPU, motherboard and GFX come from the same company - usually 3 different ones, how do they interlink, what memory is used and how much, what optical media and hows that going to work and what speed is required (relatively fine balancing act on its own) - you cant just throw the different peices together and hope!!!

I never said Nintendo couldnt compete, all I said was it was unlikely that they would try (who wouldnt like their profits from releasing current tech instead of next gen tech), it would be hard for their Board of Directors to sanction a totally different approach after being so successful this way (until they try a similar approach and possibly fail with the next release of course)

nintendo actually think about their consoles and games to increase the fun and playablity they dont just chuck money at their consoles to offer a high spec console/media player.

MW

The only problem I have with the wii is the fact that you cant get demos for the blinking thing.

I couldn't agree more, as much as I love my little white console I hate not being able to really try before I buy, unless I'm lucky and there's a game I want on in a well known high street retailer - but generally there isn't :p

It's rather short sighted to suggest that Nintendo are the only ones who try to increase playability in their games, and that Sony/Microsoft only throw money at the specs of their consoles.

The likes of Live and accessories like Playstation Eye are just as innovative and important, in my opinion, as the motion controls for the Wii. It's a shame that a system like Live will never be fully implemented into the Wii as long as Nintendo are stuck in their backwards way of thinking towards online gaming - Stupidly long friends codes which are different for each game, its ridiculous. :o

Only thing i don't like about wii games is you cannot turn the motion controls off, i was fed up being forced to do something a certain way with the controller, i know this sorta defeats the object of what the wii is trying to do but at least there should be an option to play a game normally

Just a late response to the OP.

I play my console for fun - that means more fun with friends then so be it.

I have had more fun and giggles out of my Wii than my XBox.. or mates have with their 360s.

It depends on what your personal idea if fun is and it seems there's quite a few people that disagree with you - as shown by the sales figures.

...and as shown by the replies in this thread. I guess that means that those who have contributed to this thread aren't "serious gamers" according to the OP. So, OcUKers, how does that make you feel?

I think serious games relates to the 360 and ps3 owners. People who own a Wii generally aren't serious gamers its more of a casual thing. I don't think you can really argue with that (of course there will be the odd exceptions).

Kinda wrong. one of the main selling points of 360 and ps3, much like other consoles was that they are more for casual users, compared to PC :)
Wii has enough serious games to be honest, they are just more fun orientated at the moment instead of the OMG OMG SHINY GRAPHICS BEST GAME EVA! to be honest :)
Mario Kart is going to be a killer, saying the Wii needs to fail when an 8p online Mario Kart is scheduled for release is just STUPID.

LOL.. this thread shows how narrow minded some people are..

I have all 3 consoles, and as a 'gamer' (not sure what status..) I love the Wii...

This reminds me of the latest TV adverts for the 360 where a living room is "built" outside, with a 360 and a flatscreen TV, and the onlookers pick up the controllers and start to play. I can't remember the tagline for the advert but it seemed to be tipping the hat towards the Wii's success at getting diverse people playing together, as opposed to traditional gamers playing online via XBL. It's a shame that they ruined it by having a woman picking up a controller to play Halo 3... I don't know any women that would suddenly become interested in gaming just to play Halo 3.

Okay, change my comments to 'The Wii could be bad news for any serious hardware junkie' If it makes you happy.

The point I am / was trying to make is boardroom boffs will look at the wii's success and say we do not need to go extravigant on hardware specs for our next system and use the same strategy as Nintendo... I'm not dissing the Wii in any way. I had one, I have a DS, I had a N64 and my favorite console of all time was my SNES ! But I do look forward to the next 'latest' technology being implemented to future consoles.

Reading what I put, and then what you've said in response, you're agreeing pretty much exactly with what I've put (and also I agree with a lot of what you've said)!

The Wii, might not be as hardcore as a 360 or PC in terms of gaming however it doesn't have to be serious to be called a gaming system. I'm sure the games are very easy to pickup and play for kids which IMO not all games tend to be now-a-days.

I think more fun games would make it a better console ...

Good.

Excessive focus on graphics and spiralling console specifications will ruin the games industry if they continue. I'll put it into simple maths because I'm supposed to be going out, and I can't be bothered to spend ages forming a full, coherent argument.

Push for better graphics = longer times required to develop games = higher costs involved = less risks taken = less imagination put into games.

It really is that simple.

Nintendo. The PS1 began life as Nintendo's answer to the MegaCD. When Nintendo decided to drop the project, Sony decided to carry on. I'm sure they're pretty glad they did in hindsight.
