Lacie 500GB USB2.0 External - Only £53.99 +VAT (£63.44 inc. VAT)

That sounds really safe for a drive that i would be using to store valuable (valuable to me, pictures etc) data. Amongst other stuff like programs, work etc.

How to power off a hard drive -
Just pull the cord! :confused:

To be fair though, I wonder how many power buttons on the back of these things do anything more than just 'break' the connection?

It's no different to an internal HDD, when the PC powers down all that happens is the power is cut to the drives. As long as it's not in the middle of an I/O operation (ie stopped with safely remove hardware) then it'll be fine.

I'm basically looking for a BIG USB device to backup my backups. eg: All my backups are typically done to USB enclosures next to the PCs. My concern is if we get burgled everything goes! PCs and USB enclosured.

So I simply want another USB enclosured to every now and then (eg: every 3 months) backup the backup drives and then to tuck it away safetly elsewhere.

I guess this unit would do that just fine :)

Where is this setting?

Here we go,

* Click on my computer

* Right click on the Lacie Hard disk drive

* Click on properties

* Click on the hardware tab

* Highlight the drive you want

* Click on properties, Bottom right.

* Click on policies

Job done :)

Hope this helped !

Is the warranty on these 2 or 3years? Because samsung will know what batches of drives were sold to lacie and if these have shorter warranties can people live with loosing 12months. On samsungs the serial number has letters in its code that define if its oem or not. Can somebody whos already took their drive out do a warranty check and let me know please, im tempted to grab one myself and lob in an smaller sata drive.

The Lacie drive in question does have an external supply. Only drives based on 2.5" laptop disks are self powered so you have a 200Gb or so size limit (at the moment).

thanks for that. read further up to that these dont power off like my WD my book does. may get one though but still may go for sata 2 int drive, are these sata 2 or 1's?

That how I use mine. I'm still looking for a good encryption for mine.

I bought one of these a month or so ago, to pair up with my macbook, just for general storage use. I haven't been using it much, but it seems to be having a few problems when i do.

While I am using it, it seems to randomly unmount itself and i get the unsafe removal message. no warning or indication why it might be doing this, does this sound like any known issue?
