Well, my Dad might be up for murder!

Cape Town is reasonably nice, but most of SA is going downhill big time. I'd imagine most burglars would shoot you in SA, so firing first is probably a good idea.

Could not pay me to live out there now.. :(

Just thought I'd say:

I got back from spending 10 days in Cape Town and had absolutely no problems whatsoever. We even visited a township (almost synonymous with crime hotspot) and it was absolutely fine.

The waterfront (where we stayed) is great; cheap, picturesque and safe. South Africa is a beautiful country (everywhere you look is aesthetically delightful) and as long as you avoid the main trouble areas (Jo'Burg, Durban?) you should be alright.

As for the debate:

Personally I think the OP's father was perfectly within reason to shoot the intruders, in a city with the highest murder rate in the world I think it's reasonable to assume a 'shoot to kill' policy when armed gunman are in your home. Anyone who says otherwise, in my opinion, is wrong. :)

That said I wouldn't want to live there. There's nothing like not having to open a barbed wire framed gate to get in to your home.

No, he's not a trained marksmanship. He shot them on the intent to kill them because they were a threat to him and his family. As I said above, he shot first to prevent them shooting him. Again, like many have said here shoot them to kill. Because if he shot them in the legs, two men with guns against one guy with one gun? You obviously make sure they can't use them once you've shot them.

The above is a perfectly reasonable response. :D

Now I have been trained in defensive/combat handgun (don't ask), so I know a little about the effectiveness of handguns.

I would suggest that in this scenario facing multiple targets, one round to the centre mass (torso) of each target is the right course of action. After this, if you get a failure to stop, which is very likely with a handgun, I was taught to take one AIMED shot to the cranio-ocular vault (between the eyes).

Anyone who thinks you can stop someone by shooting them in the limbs using super leet shooting skills and a 9mm or similar has been watching too many films. ;)

If I have to remove another one of your posts, you're getting a ban.

Cut it out. Now.

Mod pwnage, thank god too :)

Ice on fire, i just read the whole thread and i can say for certain that i would have done exactly the same thing. Well played on your dad and i hope he isn't too shaken up.

With regards to some people talking about strategic shots in the leg, then disarming them..... Stop watching steven seagal and chuck norris films and just try to think how you would react when you know what these types of burglars are like, and carry.

I showed South African Jif (Geoff) the posts by I Am Vengeance and he nearly wet himself.
Now Jif is a mega christian and prays constantly for the people he has killed but he says that you have to make sure they are down with no chance of ever getting back up.
After all these years I also found out he was part of the SA Police but he won't talk about it.
Those were the days when lots of Africans died falling down the stairs.

I personally dont see anything wrong in protecting your home against intruders, if that means shooting them then so be it as they shouldnt be there. I think that "their rights" should be non-existant the second they set foot in you home with the intent of theft or even worse murder. You as a home owner have no idea what their intent is if you catch them in the act so you should take what ever action necessary to prevent any harm to you or your family. The only problem i can see is the old "reasonable force" issue, then again two against one is pretty un even odds and i doubt he could have took them both on and won so i would say he used reasonable force

Agreed, you'll probably find that those who suggest leg-shots have never actually handled a gun.
I shoot 9mm, .38, and (if feeling particularly flush on the day) .357 at my local range, and I learned the first time that I pulled the trigger that hitting a target with a handgun is nothing like it is in films. It's tricky enough to get good consistent groups in a stationary hanging paper target, let alone a moving target that has the ability to shoot back.

If the intruders had guns then fair enough...

Haha, yea shoot the gun from their hand SWAT style.

Your Dad did the right thing. I agree, if someone breaks into your house, you have the right to shoot them, or at least I believe you should have the right to shoot them.

It's a shame we can't have guns for our personal protection in the UK.

should have shouted HEEEEEAAAAAAADDDDDDSSHHHHHOOOOOOTT

Seriously: I hope he's cleared.. it's what I'd have done in the same situation!

A better aim and he could have said...

DOUBLE KILL :D
or UNSTOPPABLE. :o

goes back to reading posts.....

Death isn't harsh at all. If they break into my house they are there for two reasons; to steal stuff and to harm anyone getting in their way. For this, they got shot. End of.

Don't be so ridiculous
The majority of burglaries/house breakings are just that, they enter to steal property not harm / murder people!!
You have a very naive black and white view on things, what’s to say he doesn't have a starving family at home too feed or has a horrible drug addiction? Does someone deserve to die for this?

Unless your dad was genuinely in fear of his life then I hope he gets banged up for murder and the key thrown away! Civilized society has no time for pathetic and over the top vigilante 'justice'.
