tough choice

Sorry mate but you just get the point of the whole Cosworth era.

daft IMO, I fail to see why this car commands such a price, completely crazy. Will that Focus RS command a silly price in 20 years time? It seems like the same kind of thing to me, a hot limited edition Ford with RS in the name, and is almost certainly more capable than the Sierra, despite being FWD.

That is not the point, when this car came out int the 80's cars of this type were stil relatively rare, not like today where cars of similar type and performance are common place. It was one of the cars to have (if you could get hold of one). The hatches of today do not have same appeal most (not all) are bland imo, but back then this car was special and still is, No one in thier right mind could compare a Focus RS to an RS500, the RS500 will always be remembered, the RS focus maybe too but not in the same way.

TBH i would pay for £25k. Probably has all authentic parts, real mint model of how cars were made to go fast in the 80's. Has a lot of racing heritage in its blood. Built for one reason and that is speed.

And I don't really get why people associate Cosworths with chavs? RS turbos yeah, but Cossies? I've never seen a chav driving about in a Cosworth, they could never afford to buy, run, insure or maintain one!

Simple - the Sierra Sapphire Cosworth. Rocket powered dustbins.

Dustbins they may have been, but BMW had nothing in response to it for Joe public.

Oh they were awesome when they were new but 10-15 years later, its where the whole chav in a Cosworth thing comes from. It was the underdogs hero car of the early 90's and that doesnt translate well into the 2000's...

Whilst most of the 3 door's, and the Escort Cosworths, are enthusiast owned Minters I cannot remember the last time I saw a 'Saph innit mate' that wasn't.. well, looking like a quick but crap old Sierra covered in rust and generally unloved.

That's the whole point. It's not a car designed, built or sold in the 2000's.

You rightly bemoan people slating BMW drivers and many of those people moaning have neither driven one or have any hope of owning a decent one. This seems to be how cars get tarred with a image that goes beyond the car itself.

Is this fair? No probably not,it's just human nature.

I have driven many fine examples of the Cosworth, from standard RS500s all the way through to full blown works prepared cars and got far more of a smile getting out from them than any of the other cars i have owned.

It's a car that summed up a era,Ford never made any appologies for the Rep the car got and nor should they.It was and still is a amazing car.

No, of course it isn't. But people who are saying they are 'chav cars' are not reffering to when it was new - they are referring to the here and now. Although as the chavs slowly crash the remaining shabby Sapphires the balance will be once again restored in favour of the enthusiast.

Not at all, most BMW drivers are ****'s who ruin the brand for everyone else.

That's surely why this could be valued as it is.

I agree it is a shame that they fell into the hands of Joy-Riders/Chavs but thats what happens when a company builds a affordable car that goes like stink that is also fairly cheap to maintain. In 20 years time we could be having the same discussion about a Evo9/10

Oh I quite agree - it is not the fault of Ford or Cosworth. It's one of those things that happens to affordable performance cars that are 'cool'. It's happening to the Impreza right now.

I suppose it is how Audi/BMW and for that matter Porsche keep their brand as it is. If you are going to build a real fast car, build it well, equip it to the max and sell it at a premium.Keeps it out of yobs hands.

Compared to?

This was 1984/5 when this car was being put together.Aerodynamics have moved on a bit.Think the big spoiler on the WRC Impreza is any less laughable?

Compared to, most others?

Not at all, the spoiler on the Impreza is equally as ridiculous.

No? I didn't feel i needed to comment on it, I guess I was wrong.

Regardless of the year it was built, it still looks ridiculous. If I saw that driving down the street, I wouldn't think 'ZOMG that spoiler is a belter because the aerodynamics industry in 1985 was crap"

I'd think "What a gash spoiler"
