ATI HD 3870 X2 (R680); Official Specifications & Images

Yea i know but if it is hitting 20k in 3dmark its going to be better than crossfire fps in games which is usually better than an 8800ultra so this when it comes should be the fasted single card on the market. If the price is right then ati are definately back in the game.

cant wait till benches but i think it will only be good at big res the same that was with 7950gx2 and 7900gtx still was getting same fps on lower rezes but who knows the card looks long do

7900GTX was not better at higher res unless 1280x1024 is classed as a higher res.

This card should be good for 1280x1024 and proberbly give a nice boost at any res if it doe indeed work as one card and not crossfire.

Well if its faster than an ultra in 3DMark dont mean it will be in games, it proberbly will though.

Will be getting one of these. Can't wait. :D

I heard middle to end of January banded around as a probable timeframe.

What this means, is that an official product from ati that is basically limited to crossfire (unless one core can be disabled?), the drivers must be prompt and bloody well written for all new game releases, or at least have a mode that decently supports games that don't specifically support crossfire.

With that in mind (and the lack of full stops in last paragraph), this might mean better crossfire drivers for everyone when this is released :)

I'm sure I read that the card is pretty much finished and ready to go, ATi are just waiting on perfecting the drivers for it.

I hope they give a specific launch date for it so I can sell my 8800GT in advance so it does not loose value even more, or maybe this card wont actually effect the value?

Looks like a very interesting card, looking forward to seeing some proper benchmarks. This is definitely the future of gfx cards, multiple cores on one pcb similar to the quad core cpu's we have now.

gpu's are alredy past that stage, they are massively parallel and extremely efficiant at what they do. cpu's have always been playing catchup. putting two cores on one board is just the usual brute force 'hey look at me' way of thinking.

also, i thought these cards were 12" long? if thats the case, at ~1.5" longer than a gtx, they certainly arent the same length

If you believe the rumours ati's next top end is going to be 4 chips on 1 board and the chips are meant to be based on the lines of the 3870's so this card maybe a good measure on how they may perform. Low end is 1 chip medium end 2 and i suppose they could go medium to high 3 then obviously highend 4. I hope they do something with the aa though as to me this is what has weakend there current line up of cards.

They cant put 4 of the 3870 chips on one board, would be too long or too wide, the cores will have to get smaller for that I think.

so does this card run in crossfire or is it just an mega GFX card with two chips working together? (which kind of is crossfire) lol.

i'm confused how it'll work.

i can't really remember but didn't the 7800 x2 have like only a few games that supported both chips?

It will work xfire, but the bridge that would normally connect the 2 boards will be done internally, on the PCB, possibly allowing for higher frame rates as there may not be the latency going over an external bridge.
