*****THE OFFICIAL***** MASS EFFECT THREAD

Anyway... I need to know about opening containers etc. Sometimes it says I don't have the skill to do it since I'm playing a soldier and putting most points into combat skills, but does said skill depend on the player character or the tech skill of the whole squad? In other words, will having Tali in my squad help?

Basically, if you're a soldier and have Tali in your squad (provided you trained up points for her skills) - you'll be fine with opening the higher up containers - the game counts the total skill level e.g. First Aid, You've got 4 points and another team mate has 2, the total points used when you activate health packs is 6 points :)

In one word: yes. The game takes the best score of the chosen squad so don't waste points on your character if Tali is better.

Thanks buds. I was going to reroll as engineer but the idea didn't suit me, so I just wanted to make sure that sticking someone like Tali into my squad would help before I go changing my play style. :)

The manual is useless. I miss the days of Baldur's Gate and its pages of charts and tables.[/geek]
Trust me, you're not the only one. :(

I think it's just the character that has the highest skill that is counted. Take a character with decryption and use the points to get the 'open hard objects' skill - You can open any container :)

Gamespot Game Guide
I didn't know this existed. Bedtime reading for me tonight. ;) :D

Edit: It does seem to say, on page 4, that only first aid and medicine skills are added together.

Gamespot Guide said:
Also, keep in mind that only the highest level of Decryption or Electronics applies to those powers. There's no need for two characters to have a lot of Decryption; only the highest applies. However, skill points in First Aid and Medicine areadded together, so multiple party members with skill points in those skills can come in handy.
I guess that means I will always have Tali in my team. I think she's cool anyway. :p

It would make sense that First Aid + Medicine skills stack together - otherwise why bother having more than one person learn it? That said, however, surely two awesome engineers would be better than one...I wonder why it doesn't stack - if indeed, it doesn't.

I agree. It'd be nice if it stacked, but it'd probably unbalance the game a lot and they'd have to introduce a whole lot of extra super-hard terminals and things to the game. That would probably result in forcing the player to stack up on technical squad members instead of mixing it up a bit.

True - on that note, it'd have been nice to have some more difficult code-breakers. I don't know how, but just something a little more difficult as the difficulty (both game-difficulty and item-difficulty) went up.

I wonder how they're going to deal with moving skills and such to the next games/expansion content. I guess the first one could be mostly 'level up and get skills' while the next ones are focused on story. I dunno, I'd feel kinda bummed if I lost all my skills/stats when it carried over.

Gamespot Game Guide seem to state hat it stacks... perhaps it's only for First Aid, if it is so, I'm sorry about my previous post being misleading...

No need to apologise matey. I recently bought a box set of the Mass Effect art book and game guide (thought the game guide would come in handy for a second play through because it has masses of charts in it) and even that is useless. It simply doesn't mention if it stacks or not.

I completed the game a few weeks back, really enjoyed it.

I just couldnt play through it again though, I dont see the point in wasting so many hrs retracing old ground. I realise that some of the game experience will be different but not enough to justify the time I would spend on it.

It really does affect her, im just not sure how much.

Just read up about it....theres no permanent damage, it only changes the dialog when you first find her :(

haha, Thats how I played it the first time round anyways. :D

It does mess her up, But as you said not pertinently. I could give spoilers but this is the spoiler free thread :p

I finally got my first two ally achievements on my 4th run through the game on insanity. You do have to do a lot of side quests for it to trigger. I got the Sentinel (Aiden) one first, and then the Krogan (Wrex) one minutes later when I finished an additional two quests on the citadel.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. It's going to be practically the same bar a few minor differences in what happens a few times and some dialogue. It's not different enough for it to be interesting on a second playthrough.

Got this for xmas from my GF. Really liking it so far. currently doing the 1st of 3 leads having just taken command of the normandy. I am rubbish at games that involve progressing skills etc though, so I doubt my character will be good, but as long as I can complete it.

At this stage, how far towards the end am I? I am currently looking for that girl at the dig site, and I have 2 other leads which I have to follow up after this.

Playing as a soldier :)

You'd as near as you want to be, to be honest, you only need to do the main story missions. If that's all you're counting, you're not even a quarter the way through, count the rest and you're not even a tenth done :)

I love the game in many respects but it doesn't seem like theres going to be many proper worlds to explore at all. Coming from KOTOR I'd have thought at least 6 but more like 12+

The characters are talking about the end being near and I don't feel like I've scratched the surface based on my experiences with many other RPGs.
