Asus P5K Premium -OR- Abit IP35 Pro

I actually liked the look of the Asus P5K Premium
Yeah me too but it was too expensive plus I couldn't see what it offered over the P5K-E WIFI-AP.

The Blurb from the ASUS P5K-Premium page had me scratching my head trying to work out what the feature was?

To be honest, if I was going for a motherboard right now & I didnt NOT like Asus so much with there crap RMA service & soldered on bios chip lol. :p I would choose the Asus P5K-E, you can get it real cheap if you look around.

Easily done man, I thought this thread was about the P5K-E until Nelly started asking me strange questions lol :D

Thats the board I choose, under £100 and most bells and whistles you need.
I wonder if a fan is needed blowing over the PWM's/NB etc when clocking a Q6600 at say 3.6ghz?

I'm confused now

will the Asus P5K-E WiFi actually run two Raptors in raid 0 as the boot drive, or is it going to far to much hassle and I will have to get a raid controller.

does anybody have this set up

I'm confused now
Lol I don't blame you! :D

There is some serious 'worry mongering' going on in this thread!

I've never heard of these problems before but from having quickly skimmed through the links kindy provided it seems to be a SATA 2 RAID or ACHI issue on the *Premium* board. Is the Raptor a SATA 2 drive?

If your getting the Asus P5K-E WiFi I would leave the Premium owners to get on with it :p

but are the boards that different? If these a problem with Premium board these a chance there could be one with the... er... budget one?

crazyDAJT will you please calm down :p

Your dealing with ASUS here, they are one of the biggest and best motherboard manufacturers in the world (3rd rock from the sun) so your not gonna get a humdinger.

I've never had an issue with their motherboards so there is a good chance you will have a good run also. Out of interest have you ever used an ASUS motherboard before?

**takes 3 deep breaths**

sorry, got carried away, its just I don't want to fork out the cash to fined it don't work, I understand there is an element to risk with system building, i just want to reduce this.

I have used an Asus motherbord before, but that was back in the early pentium days. rock solid, I never had a BSOD on it once it only got retired because my brother got a new PC and I had no use for it.

Read from No 21 on the link below:-

Asus motherboards maybe good but if anything does go wrong your really screwed. I would personally stay well clear of Asus motherboards - facts.

1) RMA process takes 3-6 weeks because Asus send mobo's abroad for repair.

2) Soldered on bios chip - which means if you have a bad flash you will need to RMA the motherboard & cannot replace the bios chip.

3) You cannot revert to an older bios if the one your using isnt as good as the previous, which is totally ridicuous.

Have you used an ASUS board Nelly? If so did you have a bad experience because I'm getting the distinct impression you really don't like their boards?

Hold up, firstly I RMA'ed an ASUS board in DEC 2006, there was actually nothing wrong with it the problem was to do with a 'pair' of faulty graphic cards I was using, anyway I sent the board back to the eTailor who tested it and sent it back to me RMSD, The boards round trip was one week. So how long does this period last when you can send the board back to the eTailor you bought it from? I am guessing at one year?

Well you would have to be really unlucky to bork your BIOS but yeah I guess its possible (never happened to me), having said that don't ASUS boards have a safety feature built in to avoid these nightmares you speak of:

Actually I did notice that but after reading some of the threads at Xtreme it appears there is a way to 'revert' back to an older BIOS should you have the need.

I love my new Asus P5K-E...it's the Abit i did'nt like lol:p....as to reverting back to older bios...there's more than one way.:D

I have problems with my WD Caviar 500Gb. I has to be on sata 1 or no boot.

p5k8800ultra01fj8.jpg

5 - 2 - 1
6 - 4 - 3

It says in the manual a boot disk has to be attached to one of the red ports, in the picture above thats SATA 1, 2, 5, 6 while the two black ports (3, 4) are for non boot devices. So which ports have you tried to connect your Caviar to with no joy?

Before I say anything, I am typing away on my secondary web browsing PC using an Asus A8N-Sli Premium, I dont like bashing companys but I just dont like the way Asus do things at the moment, if they switch back to removable bios chip, reduce rma process to 5 days or less in the UK before & after 12 months & let us revert back to previous bios in the standard normal way then I'll be very keen to try Asus once again.

I think my 486 mobo was an Asus, I had a PII Asus mobo cannot remember which, Asus A8V Deluxe, A8N-Sli Premium. I'm still using the last motherboard as we speak, my A8V Deluxe failed on me & I could never get through to anyone at Asus UK in regards to an RMA, I gave up after a few weeks. I have done a lot of research in regards to Asus RMA's, if you do some thread searching just on here you will see the nightmares that people have had having to return motherboards as they get shipped abroad for repair hence the long RMA times.

It looks like e-tailers upto 1 year, over that Asus have to provide support. I'm just wondering if that means OcUK would actually replace the defective board or actually send it off to Asus for repair after the 7 or 28 days?

LOL what silly words they use all their latest boards have soldered on bios chips anyway so how the hell do we replace them without voiding our warranty LOL!!!. Would be great if it worked, well maybe CrashFree Bios 3 does, but CrashFree Bios 2 most definitly doesnt as I already tried with my Asus A8N-Sli Premium, luckily on the older motherboards the bios chip can be taken out so I replaced it & hot flashed the previous bios chip so I had a backup.

I did read an article about removing the actual soldered on bios but to be honest we shoudnt have to really & the the CreashFree Bios utility seems abit hit & miss.

Nicely written Nelly,

So I hear all your points and to be fair I have had no experience of ASUS RMA before, in some respects this is a good thing as It shows I've never had a problem.

Still there may come a day when I need to RMA something so thanks for the heads up. I don't think this will put me off buying or recommending ASUS motherboards to others though?

Sounds like you got unresolved issues, maybe you and ASUS need to have a group hug or something! ;)

I wouldn't ever give up on an RMA I am suprised you did? I managed to get a new chipset fan out of them and I did find the lines of communication a bit slow but I didn't push it too hard because it was just a little chipset fan. If anything happens to my motherboard within the first year (maybe two) its going back to the eTailor. To be fair I rarely own the same mobo for more than a year so! :o

I love the ASUS A8N-SLI family, I bought heaps of those motherboards, nearly 10 from auction (*very* used) and I have not ever had a problem, the boards just seem to be 'Tank Like' in the way they have been built?

Back then I had a good job, more money than sense lol so I ended up giving it in as a lost cause on the Asus RMA, I ended up itching for a new motherboard & bought the A8N-Sli Premium on reccomendation of people on this forum, I posted a "what motherboard thread"

To be fair it's been one of the best motherboards ive owned (apart from my Abit NF7-S & Abit AB9 QuadGT & Abit IP35 PRO lol) - had my FX-53 (130nm ) overclocked from 2.4ghz to 2.7ghz on Air without any extra cooling on the motherboard - it's great when heatpipes do actually work lol.

(omg!! did I really pay nearly £600 for an FX-53! :( Madnesss!! haha lol) Corsair DDR 3500LL's - king of DDR ram enough said. . . ;)

I should sell this rig I'd get some decent cash still really. . . lol
