1080p LCD TV as monitor?

Yep... A friend of mine is running a LG 37" 1080p as a monitor.. its pretty stonking...
thought so, maybe just some mis prints or something, i was looking at the LG37" one too
As long as the TV supports 1920x1080 over HDMI or VGA and allows the disabling of overscan (AKA 1:1 mode, Full Pixel mode, .. ) for that resolution, it would be fine.
If you can't disable overscan, the sides of the picture will be cut off somewhat, it'll be scaled slightly and generally nasty for desktop usage.

I'm planning on going the hdtv as a monitor route as well
the one I'm currently looking at is the sharp lc32x20e as it's the only 32" 1080p tv (afaik) and as has been said 37" might be too big, but it will all depend on how far away you are from the screen

50cm away from a 37" screen sounds really painful.
I used to run a 26" Samsung which would do 720p (or whatever the resolution is, can't remember) and I was about 4-5 feet away from it, that was just about enough for me.
I would try and make some kind of template on some card to see if you think 37" will be right for you, as that's very large to be sat infront of for a long time each day, especially if your eyes are already bad.

I got the same as badbob (using a samsung 1080p lcd with 15k contrast ratio) I would only really recommend it if:
your using it for graphics design and need the workspace
watch a lot of movies from your pc
your lcd tv has a good black level
otherwise there's not much point tbh. for gaming I probably wouldnt advice it, as you have to literally move your head from one side of the screen to the other and it just makes a bad response time from what you see to what you do. for gaming I would go no bigger than 28inch but as Im a graphics designer and programmer etc I need the space.

You get used to it and nope it's not painful at all.
I have no problems gaming and I don't have to move my head, just my eyes. My response time remains the same.
badbob's pic proves the point that its perfectly viable as long as your a reasonable distance away, its definiately something i want to look into in the future.

50cm is far to close to a 37" screen.
Got to say that the "reasonable" is the problem for me. I too have a Samsung 40" 1080p set. Although it is our main TV out of interest I hooked up the PC to it (via HDMI) and it works great. BUT, you do have to be pretty close up for the text to be easily legible, too close for me as you do then have to swivel your head around to see things. I have played games (sitting further away) on it and they look great on it.
I do use the TV to surf the net by plugging a laptop into the VGA. It is good for this specially if two of you want to see the web pages. However, I do change the Windows text size to large and as well as the default font size in Firefox to make it easier to read.
IMHO, 40" is maybe a bit too big for continuous daily use. 32" seem reasonable to me. Are you going to use it as an HD TV as well though? 1080p on a 32" is arguably wasted.
I would say the ghosting on the Samsung M8x is a similar amount of ghosting to my Philips 20" 200W, but it's much smaller so the bigger screen shows it up more. The 22" Samsung pebble was really smooth whilst spinning, but at half the size it's hard to compare too.
Just over 1M is a good distance from the screen for windows/games use.
