Vista is fantastic

Use either VMware or Virtualbox over VPC. I've used all three and fins VPC is much slower then any of the competitors :)

Oops forgot VMware - yes that certainly isn't crap :) Although I personally prefer the "lightweightness" of Virtual PC but I'm just wierd like that :D

That's strange as I find that VPC is a lot less optimised for speed then either of the competitors mentioned above, and that's from someone who likes MS products :)

I used VPC for a while but just recently switched to VMware. Oh my what a difference. I've got Unbungo and XP running on mine and just realised that VPC doesn't support USB 2.0 at all.

Control Panel > Windows Defender > Tools > Options > scroll down to real time protection & untick :)

Personally i am loving my vista experience at present, much better than it was on release.

i've disabled indexing (always have done from windows 2000 onwards!), but how would i disable superfetch and what does it actually do?

vista's indexing is tons better than 2000/xp, i'd leave it on, makes the start menu search instant

leave superfetch on it boosts the application load times

as with all features, use services.msc if you want to disable them

I have gone back to XP as I suffered from a problem of VERY slow transfer rates across my network, as well as to USB drives.

Even with all the updates and hotfixes applied the transfer rate was atrocious compared to XP.

I am hoping that SP1 will resolve this issue, as the hofixes, IIRC, have worked for some people.

i used to disable as much as possible but i can't be bothered anymore. i've even given up using vlite. the only things i've disabled are system restore and defender.

Received my Vista x64 Ultimate from OcUK :) a few days earlier than the official launch date and have NEVER looked back. Actually, can we have a Vista Birthday party on the forum?

Using XP does seem weird after using Vista. As many have said, Vista really is a complete O.S and even before SP1, I found performance/Stability to be at least on par with XP SP2.

Sooo many people say "Ive heard this Vista is crap" (Likely having NEVER used it themselves) and when you say "Well, ive had it since launch and actually, it is very good" - They look at you like something they stepped in at the elephant enclosure at the zoo.

Or they will say "Well, my 10 year old printer doesnt work with Vista" - You point out that is not the fault of Vista and they walk off in a huff :)

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE SAYING IT IS A BAD OS?

People I talk to say they like it?

Why the hell does it take so longer to transfer files on vista, its ridiculous, i've connected the pc's directly through an rj45 cable. 100 Mbps.

its reporting that its going to take 2 1/2 hours to transfer 34gb, damn ridiculous.

That is a bit long, but realisticly it's take about 1 3/4 hours under normal circumstances anyway.

I have not yet made the switch to Vista, but have used it quite a bit on friends PC's & Laptops.

I noticed it took about 20 minutes the other night to transfer 240MB from my mobile phone to a Vista Home Laptop.

I tried the same transfer on my own PC - XP Home Sp 3 (Beta) - when I got back home & it took seconds rather than minutes.

Well.... I was going to say that it appears to transfer badly, but if you work out the acctual calculation for your network. It appears that your network is fine just about. (34GB is a lot of data) The increase you will see is only if you upgrade to 1000Mbps network because your bottle neck is the transfer rate of your network cards. If you have applied all updates to your system. then I suggest you wait for SP1 coming out very soon because to rumor... This fixes transfer issues with Vista. Hope that helped.

Any reason why the USB transfer was so slow for me?

The phone is USB 1 as I say, it was slow on Vista, fast on XP.

I did a similar calulation and got roughly 100mins or so at 40% efficency.

So he could be one of these with problematic hardware as the reports from some people have been fine but on the other hand there are problems with other people on this forum. Wait till SP1 is released and recheck.

If you are not happy then you should have done abit investigation before acctually buying the product.

You mean your using USB1 still on Vista? If it was fast on XP then its obveous you have issue with Vista but this is not a vista problem as most people are not having these issues. So once again I say it to everyone to wait till SP1 is released.

That calculation is with everything running correclty, not with the Vista bug.
