Football Fixtures 12-13th January **Spoilers**

lol? rafa has had qutie abit of money to spend like 27m on torres! which lets face it if they didnt have him they would be in bottom half of table by now .

Apart from Torres some of his buys have been squad players at best.

I said "until this season he's been limited by funds". You can't buy a squad of premiership winning capable players in one season either.

the only thing getting me through this is the memory of the toon 5-0 victory over Man U, that's all being a toon supporter is nowadays ... memories

Will add more on Monday when I'm not tired from work

Didn't he bring Torres, Voronin and Babel in this season, Crouch and Kuyt the year before.

The rate he rotates the strikers is baffling to be honest too.

Can we get this thread back on topic? The Liverpool - Man U bickering is pretty pathetic.

A deserved win for Man U. :( I expected the result but I didn't expect the scoreline especially after the first half.

I said to my mate in the pub after the second goal that we would collapse after that and lo and behold, what happened.

I think Alan Smith should be hung from the Gallowgate End to be honest. The biggest waste of space in our club after Barton. Not only did he give away the free kick that led to the first goal, he could have given away a penalty and then he can't keep his yap shut for more than 2 minutes. (although the last goal wasn't over the line).

Oh, but ronaldo could play better alongside gerrard and torres, whilst you make him play alongside... park and anderson?

I will agree here, we have poor strength in depth compared to the other 3 of the big four, we're incredibly guilty of having quite a poor side compared to our main spine.

Yes, Gerrard and Torres are top class, no doubt. But the problem is you only have two and the harsh reality is man utd have more. This is shown in our respective league positions. How we play, in terms of attacking so much (again - the league table doesn't lie) also helps Ronaldo.
This isn't to say Ronaldo isnt a great player who wouldn't succeed with the likes of liverpool. He would, hes a great player and liverpool are a good side.
I am simply saying he wouldn't have 20+ goals already, had he been in any other team (perhaps close with Arsenal).
You only had to watch our recent game vs villa when Tevez, rooney, giggs and scholes were out. He wasn't the same player

was a bit stupid of all the rave on about winning league this season anyways really.
With Agger+Carra at CB with only hyypia to cover, he was supposed to be getting sold but no cover was bought so he stayed.
Finnan was good at RB last season, but hes been bad this season tbh, Arb is a RB playing at LB, and riise, well no idea where he should be playing, maybes in League2 on the bench?
Then who do we have, hm. Sissoko, kewell(hasnt been that bad since hes been back for injury i guess) aurellio(was injured, squad player really though.) pennant(was improving but obv, injured)
Tbh babel and lucas can be left alone, theyre young and are showing promise, gerrard alonso and masch are untouchable, theyre all worth starters.

Then we'v got the upfront problem. Voronin was a pointless signing, torres was a great one, needed. Kuyt and crouch would be alright partners for him really, but if one was sold and voro wasnt signed atleast it would mean someone who's talents demanded a higher wage could have been bought. Id prefer seeing babel play behind torres most of the time tbh.
All in all you cant slate the squad because its the first season with money, and hes had less years than fergie, atleast now he wont have to buy underpar players to fill gaps as we'v already got a full squad. I dont want to see another midfielder signed tbh though, there was a rumour floating and we'v got too many, theyd have to be pretty special to warrant it.

Johnnycc, you named crouch and pennant as our 2 players, then rooney and tevez as yours, isnt that abit er, biased?
Pennant is hardly our strongest player, hes not in the spine of the squad in the sense he is rotated at will, crouch doesnt even start, or get on the bench.
Point was its easy for me to turn that around and name 2 of our great players, and 2 of yours that are far from starting quality.
We know you have more world class, the thing is, how much did each cost?

Voronin was signed before the end of last season, Torres was an excellent buy and Babel looks like he'll develop into a good player. Crouch was brought in in '05. Kuyt was just a mistake... end of.

Where's that site that sums up the average spending over the last 6 or 7 years of the Big 4 and shows that Liverpool have spent as much if not more than Utd on players? I saw it on the Caf a while ago.

Anyway, Liverpool have had the basis of a title winning side for years but the players that have been brought in around them have been of an embarrassing quality and as each year goes by their chances diminish.

I think for any team to be successful there needs to be a core of players that play week in week, week out.

To many managers now tinker with this core group of players to the detriment of the team as a whole.

Great result today, I don't think the 6th crossed the line but we had two clear penalty's not given (Rio's and Giggs). I'm a happy camper and look forward to motd.

The last goal wasn't a goal, the first goal wasn't a free kick and who knows what could have happened if Owen's goal wasn't wrongly chalked off, not to mention some of the defending was shocking - there was one point in the second half where Ronaldo was standing near the corner in Newcastle's half with not one of their players within 20 yards of him.

No doubt a good performance but the best ever? I wouldn't even say the best this season.
Surely credit where credit's due?
We scored 6, had 3 off the line and I heard a possible penalty?

For a team who 'defend poorly' they did well to make some phenomenal last ditch tackles, clear 3 off the line and Given made some brilliant saves.
